'Manchester City are expected to turn their attentions to Valencia winger Juan Mata after being quoted a huge £44million to finally seal the signature of Alexis Sanchez.

The FA Cup winners are keen to add quality to Roberto Mancini's side before players return for training in early July.

They have been long-time admirers of Sanchez and though City appear to have blown Manchester United's bid for the Udinese wide man out of the water, he still prefers to join Barcelona.

So Mancini is looking again at Mata, who is also interesting Liverpool and whose representatives say he is willing to discuss a transfer to the Premier League once Spain's Euro Under-21 campaign ends on Sunday.'

Are you worried? Or is this another 'City want everyone' story?

It wouldn't surprise me if City want Mata as he is hot property at present. However, has he ever heard of Man City?!!

To be honest i'm not gonna listen to any paper news as it is clearly made up stories. I would be pleased if we signed him but as time goes on it is looking more and more less likely.

There is a lot of the window left, but it does seem that teams are getting **** sorted quickly this year.

I'd be worried because if they did want him, they'd get him over us easily. And even if they don't, they've got the sort of board that says "oh, the media are saying he's good, let's just chuck 20m at him".

Yeah, and problem with Mata is that due to the U21's his profile has been raised so other clubs are now showing interest. You never know we may of had something arranged before the tournament started. But that is unlikely, so i feel we may now struggle to sign him.

I live in hope though <ok>

They can offer champions league football and higher wages and if they were to get him then we may have a better chance of landing Adam Johnson. while Mata is a level above Johnson with would prove useful to have Johnson in our side to build up this british core we want, and if we can get him on the cheap it would be better.

Some may say small club mentality but personally I like the idea of an english core to our team

With reports both United and City are interested its likely that if the reports hold any truth, Mata wont be going to Liverpool.

I do however suspect the reports are just paper talk.

I hope not! City would blow just about every club out of the water regarding transfer fees and wages.

In my opinion, we've got to get in quickly to get him.

Good way to look at things Bozz. They key to sustained success is to have a British core I think. Its been the way with United for 20 years and Liverpool for 20 years before that....infact forever.

unfortunately for you, i think you would have announced it by now if it had been agreed.

Racist! Only joking, but I think that cheap, good english players who are on the cheap would be a shrewd buy for any premier league team. We've both seen first hand how prices have been inflated by owning a British passport.

I think that attitude is why we tend to overspend on the British talent, Bozz.

Although, I don't think we'll even go for Mata - it seems the Downing deal is coming near completion.

my opinion here is we need to be sure he's right. then go move but if he's holding out for ANYTHING or hoping for more he can jog on.

face reality... utd, et al cannot compete with city or chelsea on pure spend. why should we?

i do have to laugh at the randon dropping by by the utd fan who seriously thinks the press linking utd to the lad is true? wow name me the spanish players you've bought since pique... lol.... that was good. be happy with yonug and maybe modric and be safe i nthe knowledge you won't be any worse than last year as a result... lol the only question is will the rest be as bad as they were....:emoticon-0150-hands

Just because City make a bid, does not mean they are going to get the player. If the bid from any team is sufficient enough to fulfill his buyout clause then we can begin talks. City have champion's league, a whole lot of money and a team of mercenaries. As a footballer looking at going to another league I would try and stay away from that, the only reason he'd go to City would be for the money. With Silva, possibly Sanchez, Johnson etc... all able to play on the wings he will not get game time every week, which is one of the things many players consider before joining a club.

If Manchester United came knocking, then it could be a bit different - on top of English football at the moment, reached the Champion's league final, in the Champion's league next year. It's an enticing opportunity - but then you make the choice between them or Liverpool. It's at the point you have to look at the future of the team, their managers, their owners etc...

ZL, do you happen to know what his buyout clause is? And they won't go for both sanchez and mata, the article says that mata is the option they've chosen after missing out on him to barca.

I don't want Downing, I want Mata and Jeffren Suarez - not that I'm greedy or anything. We've already got the Valencia friendly sorted, so they can't hi-jack that one like they did with Silva

It's reported that it's €60 million, although I think the thing about buyout clauses is that nobody actually knows the true value until they've reached it. Stops people spending the bare minimum on a player.

I suppose, there's probably been transfers that have met the buyout clause but no-one knows it has apart from the team and player. Otherwise, what would stop a team from bidding, withdrawing, and then bidding less?
This might just be my FM brain kicking in, but doesn't everyone in spain have a buy-out clause? just some of them are ridiculously high :D

Yeah, Spain have to be different to every other country and I think it's the norm for all the players to have some sort of buy-out clause, not sure if it's the Spanish FA's guidelines or just something that's caught on though.

I read Ronaldo's is something ridiculous like 500 million euros.

If I were a football player who supported neither club then i'd probably choose Man Utd. Recent history shows success, they make superstars our of their players (the Beckham & Ronaldo brands look very attractive to a footballer), they're managing they're debt (I rememebr reading a a column somewhere that said leveraged debt is the norm in america and no-one has a problem with it as it's managed properly) and as a Liverpool fan i'm warey of it but if I were a Man Utd fan it wouldn't bother me too much because it's being managed (and if push came to shove the Glazers seem more intelligent then H&G so would probably sell the club before it went bust... esp. as they'd have seen what happened to H&G) and then there is the manager... this is a sticking point as we can all agree that Fergie wont be Man Utd manager in 5 years time (if he is, then i'm seriously doubting he is human) but then there will be managers falling over themselves to be Man Utd manager.... Seriously... who wouldn't want to be the Manchester United manager? I reckon if fergie retired tomorrow and offerred AVB the job he'd resign form chelsea instantly! the only managers that would probably turn them down are Kenny Dalglish & Arsene Wenger at a push

I actually think messi's is just over 220 million, i think barca hurried to make it higher after the arabs bought man city. Could be bollocks but i'm sure i read that.
