Robbie Savage was spot on, Rooney is made out to be a scapegoat all the time, someone else should be taking the blame.
No, but I think we're a bit neanderthal about it. At least with Uruguay, they can justify it. As I said about Sterling. I bet you in 4/5 years time when expectations will be for this squad to improve and challenge for the trophy, IF we don't win despite Sterling giving the same performance, he'll be slated for it. Then they'll say, he was greedy, didn't pass enough, flattered to deceive, lots of possession but didn't create anything, ran like a headless chicken blah blah blah (none of it a fair reflection ofcourse). Whereas with other countries it's more justified and based on actual performances rather than just results. I think Henry and Viali (before the match) commented on the same.
Thread Summary.... Utd fans in matths part of Wales think Rooney had a good game against Italy but England supporters from England thought otherwise.
Why should anyone "take the blame"? we got beat by a better team on the night, we were probably unlucky in the fact we created some good chances that we missed but **** happens.
You summed it up all too well. Again, English media help destroy the team belief and spirit from outside. They have become very proficient at it.
One thing that seems to have been missed about the whole match was how Italy did the equivalent of a footballing rope-a-dope on England. Right from the off, Italy were more interested in possession while England went direct, full steam ahead everytime they got the ball...often resulting in Italy getting the ball back much quicker rather than having to chase it. Perhaps there's nowt wrong in that except when you're playing in 40 degree humidity. IMO Italy paced themselves while England chased them down and that's why Italy showed no signs of tiring while half the England team went down with cramp.
Not sure about this bit, we never chased the ball all night and only attempted to tackle once they were in the last third. I think the plan was to conserve energy so we could hit fast on the counter.
People's perception was that he was **** for England,he was expected to score a goal like the one he scored at the Marracana every time he played.
Rooney was ok. made an impact and created a few other chances. Inferior players are occupying his position and as usual we are shifting our better players out left expecting kids to take us to glory. Its never ever happened before yer we persist? Scholes, gerrard and now rooney. We blame the player but should we blame the management?
Many times I watched him play for England and he was poor, but the next game for Liverpool he was great again. It happens with players.Rooney needs quality around him to get the best out of him, but we "England" lack that, in fact England's midfield is as bad as UTDs midfield.
I would argue that Barnes was no worse than the players around him but he was the object of fans ire.
And we all know why that was. I stopped going to England games because of the abuse being dished out to him. Thank God times have changed.
