Yes, Central American philosophy (Costa Rica has a progressive education and health system plus a third of the country in national parks) is very different but it is incredible that most of the region has recovered from war, disasters and poverty suffered in the 80/90s. The amount of culture and biodiversity for such a small region is astounding. Amazingly, a general from USA set up a secret base in north Costa Rica for infiltrating Honduras as they supported the far right-wing Contras against the perceived Communistic government that led to the civil war.

Shouldn't make fun of Jonathan Pearce. Feels like I'm crossing a line. Or am I? Yes! No! Wait... What's happening? Who put that line there?

I don't care what says. Pearce at his best is an excellent commentator. Seems a bit low this evening. Sounds a bit sniffy.

Martin Keown isn't at all bad as a sidekick. Way better than Neville.

Incidentally, I don't know if anyone else heard it on the Monday Night Club, a few months back, but Steve Claridge made everybody laugh when he said that Keown had a sexy voice, which was why he'd unbuckled his trouser belt. <laugh>

According to the official statistics on BBC Honduras committed one more foul in the game (14) than France!

Probably a dumb question but why is goal line technology a computer generated picture and not an actual image. How is all this calibrated?

Not sure how this system works but there is no camera footage that shows the position of the ball without any obstructions, hence the virtual representation.

so if it is calibrated wrong the projected image is wrong. How does it define if the whole of the ball crossed the line?

Well the hawk eye system used in the premier league uses several cameras around the stadium, as long as at least three of the cameras can see it you can accurately triangulate it's position.

The system used in the World Cup is a different one, I think it has a chip inside the ball and sensors in the goalposts, but I'm not sure exactly how it works.

They have both been heavily tested, and are obviously much more accurate than the naked eye which we would otherwise be relying on (it's difficult to imagine that France goal would have been given, for example, without the technology).

I wonder what follow up is made on decisions given to check the accuracy of decisions made ie France - and how this is transparent into the public domain. Just been doing some research on hawk-eye for the first time and it appears it has its critics over accuracy.

Yeah it does, but they are from Luddites if you don't mind me saying! There are no credible misgivings; it's been used for a year in the premier league and given several instant decisions which have without exception been later proven to be correct.

It's unquestionably more accurate than what we had before, which is really all that matters I suppose.
