<ok> Great to hear, would be ridiculously open at the back without him. Regarding potential captaincy, how good is his English? Or even French for that matter?

  3. If he agrees to take a pay cut to the wage cap, then i see no reason what so ever to sell him. The idea of players are old at 30 is ridiculous. If you're good enough, you're young enough.

I agree we shouldn't give him a 5 year contract, but i see no reason to offer him a 3 year contract on the right wages.

He's definitely our best defender and one of our best players. He's also played nearly every game over the last 3 years without complaint and shown excellent fitness and discipline, apart from that one time at Bolton.

So if playing around 120 games in 3 seasons doesn't show you are in good shape, then i don't know what does.

It was a bit tongue-in-cheek, even if it didn't seem it. I know he usually gets decent prices

  5. His English is ok, however i think he isn't vocal enough to be captain. He's a bit too quiet for me. He's a great player, but i think Steven Taylor should be vice captain, and Barton should get the arm band.

Yes Barton opens his mouth a lot as captain, but he's a massive figure on the pitch and in the dressing room, and is always involved and very influential.

Yeah I agree about Barton's role in the team making him ideal to be next captain, but also as you say he does open his mouth a lot and he did use his position as captain to mouth off that bit extra a few times; would the arm band really make much difference to how much influence he has already because of his personality? I'd probably be keener on giving captaincy to Taylor or Colo for that exact reason. He may seem quiet on the pitch but do we know just how highly regarded he is in the dressing room/training ground? Coloccini could = Yoda <laugh>, a quiet but wise and respected figure for all we know.

  7. The thing is, as a captain you need to have a voice everywhere, and you also need to bollock players when they need a good bollocking. Barton is all over the pitch and is very vocal. I think he should be the one to be the captain.

Barton and Colo made the difference on the derby days in my opinion, aswell as Nolan obviously.

I'm not convinced, how many captains in the premier league are bollocking players? Gerrard has always led by example not words, Ferdinand and Terry marshal their defense but leave the rest of the team to it (tending to bollock referees more than players anyway!) and Alan Shearer himself certainly didn't get involved with organising the team. Bartons going to be vocal captain or not, if we want a player to set an example in a team looking (by our recent signings) to play decent passing football on the ground who better than Colo?

He's in with a shout for captain: http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/newc...ini-keen-to-stay-at-newcastle-72703-28934375/

    he's 99% sure he isn't going anywhere.

For those who can't use the link:

FABRICIO COLOCCINI will tell Alan Pardew he wants to be part of his new-look team next season at St James’ Park when he returns to Tyneside on July 4.

And his close pal Jonas Gutierrez also wants to stay in Toon, despite waking up to speculation linking him with Atletico Madrid, Seville and Lazio this morning – yet United have received no bids so far.

Argentine defender Colo loves life with Newcastle United and, following the departure of Kevin Nolan, the Chronicle can reveal that the £10m defender is one of Pardew’s candidates to captain the Magpies next term – a job which he carried out to good effect last season, notably when he powered home a dramatic late equaliser against Wigan.

The Chronicle understands that Coloccini has told close friends that he is “99% certain” to stay at United.

But, like any player, he would be obliged to talk to bidding clubs if an offer is accepted and would work in full accordance with Newcastle.

Coloccini has been subject of interest from La Liga side Seville. But with the defender’s wage packet of £90,000 per week making him the top earner at United, the Spaniards may struggle to match his current salary.

Coloccini enjoyed another superb season at the heart of the United defence and, with only three senior centre-backs in the South American, Steven Taylor and Mike Williamson – who will miss the pre-season campaign with an arm injury – Pardew will not want to lose one of most experienced players.

Coloccini said before heading away for his summer break: “Now it is about the future at Newcastle and working towards next season.

“Our first aim was to be safe last season and we achieved it.

“Next season we will look to move up the table again.

“We work well together as a team and I think that showed when it mattered last season.

“Hopefully we can get better results at home, win more matches than last year and climb up the table.

“I am happy at Newcastle, and when I hear the fans singing my name it gives me a special feeling.”

Coloccini still has two years left of his current contract with United and signed from Deportivo la Coruna during the Kevin Keegan era.

Gutierrez – who is represented by his parents rather than an agent – is thought to be keen to stay and fight for his place at Newcastle next term.

The winger’s contract still has another two years to run, but he must contend with new boy Sylvain Marveaux for a slot in midfield next season.

Meanwhile, United sources have dismissed speculation linking them with Celtic midfielder and Scotland international Scott Brown.

The source said: “He has never been discussed.”

And despite national reports that United were interested in AIK Solna’s forward duo Teteh and Mohamed Bangura, such talk has been rubbished by Newcastle.
