I'd rather go with a former world cup referee.

Just realised I sound like a right **** saying that. That wasn't my intention. Referees have to pass exams on the rules in order to officiate, these pundits and "experts" probably haven't. Our ITV panel of "experts" all say the goal should have stood too.

Maybe there is another rule you all arnt looking at or an updated one. I agree that a ref on the panel would be nice to have.

MOTD used to have a referee (whose name escapes me) on occasionally, that was always interesting.

It's not the first time this offside thing has come up. It was also mentioned in the opener too.

Back to the Chicas & a Mexican bunch are in a bar in Manchester, she's quite a Chica too!

So the panel addressed the issue. They said that Fifa last year made a ruling that is still in effect that said that a defending header/deflection off a corner negates the offside and that is why it should have been a goal.

How can you be offside from a corner anyway?

You can't and that will be why it was on, not because it touched the defender. In the video I watched it didn't show that it was a corner so I was going on it being open play where the goal wouldn't have stood.

That doesn't matter though. As it came from a corner, so if you're not counting the flick on by the defender then it was played backwards from the corner (and I don't think you can be offside from a corner anyway, even if it was theoretically played forwards).

There's absolutely no debate about that goal being offside. Ellewoods and the ESPN lads are correct. Mexico didn't even play it forwards at any point, so there was no opportunity for an offside to have occured.

Maybe if you stood in the goal you could be offside?

No you can't as there are no offsides at all from a corner, standing in the net is counted as going out of the field of play which you are not allowed to do so if you did it intentionally there would be a booking and I think a free kick for the other team

In theory, but people do it all the time at corners and it's never penalised.

I know, now I've seen it was from a corner I agree that it wasn't offside, but the panel were still wrong with their reasoning that it was made onside due to a touch from the defender.

No because the ref gave it offside under the impression it came off an attacker. The fact he was wrong and it actually came off the defender means it wasn't offside, that's why it was discussed by the panel. It's a lot simpler than it's been made out on this thread!

    Exactly.

The rules that have been posted in previous posts re defenders deflecting the ball are for situations where, eg, an attacker shoots, the ball deflects off a defender into the path of another attacker in an offside position when the initial shot is made.

The fact the Mexico goal was from a corner means the attacker cannot have been offside, unless the flick-on header was made by his own team mate, which it wasn't.

So, the goal should have stood.
