the third goal was a nonsense - never a free kick in the first place and a debatable foul on the keeper.... Having said that spain were lucky to still have 11 men, ok there was very little contact with the headbutt but he still puts his head towards him and if the ref sees it its a red card!

It was, an absolutely pointless thing, you cant really call it an act of violence because theres so little contact but the fact that hes moved his head towards him could well have been a red card!

half time in the evening , 2-1 chile at the moment. Think they got complacent at 2-0 and Australia surprised them, still suspect chile will win though

Interesting first half. 1-1. Some attacking football from England which is helping out the vulnerability of the defence.

12 mins left and the game is slipping away. We have lost some momentum and I think Italy will just play it out now.

2 mins left. Rooney not had a good game. Stirling a revelation. Disappointed with Baines.

Looks like Hodgson took the wrong left back I thought Baines had an awful game Rooney again a disappointment & the 3 subs never changed anything once Italy scored the second they shut up shop. From what I saw of the Uruguay game we should be able to score a couple against them. By far the most impressive team so far has to be Holland.

Bad result good performance maybe we should be playing 3 at the back like the Dutch to relive our wing backs of their defensive duties
Not been on here much for a few days IT problems and what with work and dog sitting not enough time in the day relying on my phone to post this not good

England looked like they had enough about them to beat Uruguay, but the pressure will be on and that could ruin England a bit... As for the three subs I cant really see what bringing on Wilshire did, but barkley looked lively when he came on. Would also be nice if rooney ever put in a performance for England!

Based on last night I would not have played Rooney or Baines. Most of our problems were down their right and we can't afford to miss chances like Rooney missed.

I've always rated Baines as a club player. He is an attacking left back but, for England, he doesn't add anything to the attack but still leaves gaping holes in defence. I think every time he got the ball he passed it backwards/across and then ran forward into a position where he was not going to get the return. Not once did I see him getting behind the defence with the ball. Unless he is going to help penetrate the defence, as he does for Everton, all he is doing is putting pressure on others to cover for him. Personally I wouldn't play him again (and I am a bit of a Baines fan).

As for Rooney, he must be fast becoming the most over rated player. For someone with his reputation there should have been much more from him.

In conclusion we need to tighten the defence and can afford to lose Rooney. Maybe Barclay for Rooney but no idea who we have for left back. I think Hodgson has made a booboo not taking Cole as an option in defence. Although he has slowed a bit (imo) I think he would have been more effective last night at left back (at least we would have had one).

Rooney should be dropped as he doesn't look fit and i'd rather have a big striker like Lambert up front. Thank god it's an earlier start for the last 2 games as i can't take late night drinking anymore at my age and feel like s*it this morning! <yikes>

I would continue with Baines personally, he was given a very tough ride last night against some top players and he was given no support whatsoever from rooney. I don't think Baines played that well but for me it doesn't warrant him being dropped.... having said that it would be nice to have the option of cole, roy got that one wrong for me

As for rooney I don't think roy will have the guts to drop him. if that's the case he needs to play him behind the main striker, as sterling is still effective on the wing and will offer baines a bit (admittedly still not much) more protection

If he had been effective going forward Jose, i would agree. But most of his time he was being ineffective going forward and not there going backward. Rooney should not be in the team to protect a left back in my view. I always thought of Baines as a future England player but I don't think I've seen him impress in an England shirt and I'm starting to think I was wrong. He's not quite up to the task at this level.
