What's everyone's opinion on the ongoing protests in Brazil against the billions spent on the World Cup, while many of the normal people in that country don't even have basic sanitation and education ?? My thoughts are pretty obvious, being the Leftie that I am but interested in hearing other points of view. In Solidarity !!!
I cant see what they are complaining about $270 Million to build a stadium in the middle of a jungle that will host 4 games, in a city that can't be reached by car and after the world cup will not even have a local team to play in it... seems like a great idea. Around 1.5 Million people have been displaced from their **** pit homes but i am sure they will be properly looked after and re-homed in splendid locations. Overall i think the projections are that Brazil will spunk $11 Billion hosting the world cup (stadia, infrastructure etc etc) this represents 55% of the annual education budget for its 200 million population, or around 30% of its health care budget.... But they do get a 4 week football tournament for their money which will generate around $4.5 billion in revenue but unfortunately a lot of that goes to FIFA, (thank goodness too because i couldn't think of a more deserving organization) So all in all i can't for the life of me see what the people are complaining about it could be worse imagine if Brazil had agreed to host the Olympics now that really does involve wasting **** loads of money...
Your argument has won me over and I'm now realising how lucky the people out there are. I just thank god that the government over there are fair, honest and dead against corruption. Use a water-cannon on the scruffy, work shy bastards......they need a wash (That'll show 'em sanitation, eh !! ) (Great post by the way Cannock, reminds me of 'Beijing Red 4 Lyf' on twitter )
I just think it is such a wasted opportunity, to do good. Even the organising committee think that they should have focused on just 6 venues. Done correctly, the cost could have been slashed, the Tournament could have been a positive focus for the community. Money could have gone to infrastructure, and local communities, that could have generated custom, good will and future earnings. Always winners and losers in the local communities in these sceanarios....but in Rio the winners are 2% and losers 98% But no...... corruption, and jingo-ism and FIFA all got in the way.
Yeah, probably only Western European or North American countries should have the right to hold major sporting events. Oh and Australia. Of course the organisation and wasted billions is a disgrace, but Brazil is a rich country with shocking inequality in wealth distribution. Having the World Cup and Olympics is a good thing, because it gives a focus to the protests. Health, education and housing for ordinary people would have been just as bad without these events. Perhaps the embarrassment of the world seeing how angry and dispossessed people are may bring about some change. Sorry Staines, but anyone calling themselves 'Beijing Red 4 Lyf' is either totally ignorant of the nature of the Chinese regime or malevolent.
Staines, you were sucked into the media hype last time round before the Euros aswell, telling us all it was going to be a disaster but it turned out just fine. I know what you're saying but I'm worried you believe everything Sky Sports News tells you too easily.
The thing is it's probably always going to be the feeling for most countries that host an event like this. I'm sure that during the WC in South Africa the general consensus there was that it was a waste of money and that it could be used for more productive and pressing issues. I imagine that if England had won the WC bid, when the tournament finally came around there would be people here protesting in the streets and generally against the WC protesting that the money could instead be used towards the NHS/Education/Social Care etc etc. I don't think it's just a Brazil thing, maybe they're just more vociferous in their protests.
The sad fact is that FIFA take all the money. The host nation makes nothing, FIFA trouser the lot. The host nation should be grateful to FIFA for letting them have the privilege of holding the tournament so it seems. FIFA don't do too bad for a non-profit making organisation.
As Mr Yuichi Nishimura said last night, "As long as Brazil win the World Cup, it will have been worth it". Sepp Blatter then removed his hand from up his jacksie...
My world cup protest is about the amount of times "FIFA 14" with the cupped hands thingy pops up every few minutes during the matches. For f**ks sake, we f**king know what we're watching, you corporate bastards. Viva la revolution. http://www.internet-tv-spain.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/World-Cup-Logo-2.jpg
It's not about having the 'right' to hold major sporting events Stan, more about understanding the frustration of the common people of those poorer, developing countries, when they find the only way to get their message across of the inequalities they daily suffer is through violence and protest. I know we will never stop inequality and corruption in these countries but I still can't stop finding it somewhat disturbing and, in want of a better word, wrong. And if you ever used twitter (maybe you do), you might understand why what I meant by 'Beijing Red for Lyf', as the lad who runs the account is very funny, clever and makes a lot of people look very silly
I see they've been firing bullets at ITV's studio and there's bullet holes in the windows, is that a protest against Fifa or ITV's coverage?!
