Let's see how well Chile play. How high they press and how much possession they keep. Then let's decide if he'd fit in well with what MP has started to build

Yeah, literally, he's never managed a club outside of Peru, Chile or Ecuador. He's doing a decent job with the Chile team but no thank you.

He's won the Copa Sudamericana and manages an international side better than England. His career win ratio is 56%. Gerardo Martino hadn't managed outside South America until Barcelona hired him. Scolari hadn't managed a club in Europe until Chelsea hired him. Alejandro Sabella has never managed outside South America. Having European jobs on your CV is not a necessity to be considered a top manager. Every top European club will have Sampaoli on their shortlist when looking for a new manager, because his ability is undeniable. He's got to a point with Chile now where he's actually outdoing Bielsa.

No, you just heavily implied it, and said you wouldn't take him for Saints because he's only managed in South America.

Remember this conversation next time Barcelona or Real Madrid are looking for a manager. He'll be among the favourites.

Mancini now clear second fave and odds coming in all the time. Koeman out to even money.

I absolutely did not. I said he had managed in three countries, none of which have reputable leagues. If he had been successful in Brazil or Argentina that's a totally different matter, but sorry, if the biggest club on your CV (just ahead of Deportivo O'Higgins) is Universidad de Chile, you're going to find it difficult to get a job in the premier league.

He might well be, but you said he'd be on the shortlist of every top club in Europe, which is obviously not the case.

I don't know what makes you think the Chilean and Ecuadorian leagues are miles behind the Brazilian and Argentine leagues. He won the Copa Sudamericana with UD Chile. LDU Quito won it in 2009, and the Libertadores the year previous.

The best team Martino had managed before Barcelona was Newell's.

If Barcelona and Real would look at him then why would any team who could hope to attract him not?

He's now around the same odds as Ranieri, who a couple of days ago was basically in the job according to this website. #pleasebetuchel

I know mancini was evens or thereabouts recently.

edit: first time southampton manager hasn't been on the most popular bets list when i've loaded oddschecker.

However big your boner for Sampaoli is, you're not going to convince me (or anyone with any common sense) he's going to walk into a top European job just because he's got Chile playing well. I agreed he might be "among the favourites" (which doesn't really mean much, given who is among the favourites for the Saints job), not that he would be seriously considered by Barcelona or Real. He wouldn't be, especially after the Martino experiment.

Yeah after that failed "experiment" which saw them only finish second after failing to clinch the title on the final day, they've decided to just stick to top European managers like that...umm... Celta Vigo guy.

I've already committed to Koeman so if Tuchel gets anywhere Southampton then I'm off to St Mary's with a baseball bat. :p
