The thing is though, any player, if asked, would say they want to play Champions League football. Hang on a year and they can play it with us

 

This a classic. They bought the next big right back three years ago and have barely played him (jenkinson). Is chambers really going to want to follow on the same lines?

 

Not sure where to put this but I see another couple of job vacancies at SFC being tweeted about... have we sacked everybody/was cortese operating with a skeleton crew/are we building a small army?

edit: or with two complimentary season tickets for each position advertised, is this our way of filling the stadium?

 

Probably 8 of our first team have said that. If they are good enough to play champions league football they can do it by sticking together and playing for Southampton. Any player who moves for CL football is sort of stating the players here aren't as good as they think they are and they want be associated with better world class players.

My fear is Lallana and Shaw are swallowing their own hype and should be a bit more patient.

Unfortunately 8 Champions League standard players is unlikely to be enough to actually get into the Champions League. If we got someone in like Sam Allardyce or Felix Magath, I would think that Champions League would be even further away. Therefore, if I was a player and had big clubs interested in me I would want assurances from the board that they are getting a good manager in who could take Southampton that next step. Secondly I would want to know that they are targeting players good enough to get us to that level and the time frame the board wish to achieve this. If it's say 6-7 years time then older players are unlikely to want to stay as they won't be around to see that or play in it and would prefer to leave now.

We don't know whether such assurances have actually been made or not, but given the statements that have come out, it seemed that there was no clear message given to the players. Get a good manager in and I think both fans and most of the players will be happy to continue the project for another year at least.

 

All fair points. What should said players do if they are not happy with the answers? Only two options as far as I can see:

1. Put up and get on with it

2. Hand in a transfer request

 

Danny Ings is choosing between a move to Southampton or Liverpool.

 

Let's not forget that the primary reason for players moving is cold hard cash
Moving to a CL qualified club means a massive increase in salary as those clubs spend every penny they earn for being in that competition on salaries.
Why would Luke want to move when he earns £20k pw with us and a reported £160k pw with Manure guaranteed for five years regardless whether you play first team football?
"I want to test myself at CL level".....yeh right!

Doubt as much as you like but I hope some people will be able to see how long I have been on here and how I rarely post it might be noticeable that I only post when I have heard from someone creditable (though I was surprised when I saw it posted by someone on twitter).

 

Well I've looked through your previous posts and I don't see any evidence of you having had insider knowledge in the past. I'm not saying this means you're making it up, because it doesn't, but it does mean you're not exactly credible. What's your source for this Ings claim, other than a post you saw on Twitter?

 

The person that used to tell me things was flat mates with the announcer. All I can say is that I didn't get it from twitter and it was not from that person either as I don't see him at work anymore. Also was not from anyone at the club that I heard this but I genuinely would not say anything if I didn't believe it.

 

It seems odd that Liverpool would be in for Ings - a striker who would cost a fair bit and who hasn't played in the PL yet - when they have Suarez, Sturridge, Lambert and Borini already.
