FP1 about to get underway. No one about?

Hamilton loves the way he races, apparently, and says, "While it will catch me out every now and then, it is what got me the World Championship. It is what has got me here. People tend to forget that it is what got me to the front. If I wasn't able to race the way I race, I wouldn't be known for who I am today."

Interesting crash that - downshifting, braking, closing the DRS, dusty track.

Fascinating times from Red Bull. I just caught the end of a discussion between Crofty, Ted and Antony Davidson comparing Vettel and Webber. Vettel's consistently three seconds behind Webber. The most likely reason, of course, is that Webber's doing the light fuel runs and Vettel's doing very heavy fuel runs - on a par with a full tank. Since there's only one engine mapping now, Red Bull will need to understand how to manage qualifying on a race mapping (Webber) and the start of the race on a potentially more aggressive (therefore a little more fuel) race mapping than they've previously used.

The alternative opinion might be that Webber's never actually been given the special qualifying engine mapping and in equal cars he's just three seconds a lap faster than Vettel. :emoticon-0130-devil

I think Vettel was running the Silverstone spec engine mode ie. no off throttle blown diffuser, so I think that will explain some of the 3 seconds difference.

You're right - Ted's just explaining that. Three seconds - potentially more depending on how much faster than Webber Vettel can go - that's a lot, depending on fuel loads.

EDIT: Now Vettel's on Valencia mappings and still three seconds off so we're back to the Webber light/Vettel heavy scenario.

Looks like this circuit actually does suit the renaults. I suppose Monaco was ment to but it was too bumpy. Hopefully we can get a good result before the engine rules screw things up at silverstone

Interesting. Nobody voted FP1 time setter Mark Webber in the poll. Could it be a no score?

The 107% time for FP1 was 1min 47.4 so HRT and Virgin seem well inside at the moment.

Oh yeah, confirmed by Ted in FP1. :emoticon-0103-cool:

Vettel went about 8 tenths quicker when he switched to Valencia spec engine maps, so I expect them to stay on top at Silverstone.

Do you think there's a chance of someone like Renault going for a ridiculously aggressive engine map for the weekend and risk blowing an engine up in the hope of winning the race?
