''But despite the claims, people on the islands voted by 1,513 to three in favour of remaining British in a referendum last year, which Prime Minister David Cameron said 'could not have sent a clearer message'.'' It shouldn't be for either Britain or Argentina to decide, it should be down to the people, who voted to stay British. Only three people on the Falklands wanted to go Argentine.
Ah good old democracy, if only it was that simple. Kosovo after a referendum declared unilateral independence from Serbia, which was OK with the USA and EU. The region of Crimea in Ukraine had a referendum and the people who live there said they would like to be part of Russia, Oh no said the USA and EU. A few years ago Austria Parlimentary elections, a right wing candidate polled 25% ( approx ?? ) the EU threatened sanctions if his party was allowed to be part of a coalition goverment. I agree that the people who live there should have the right to decide, it just seems as though thats not always the case these days.
I see your point but the turnout in Crimea was ridiculously low, didnt something like 99% of people in Falklands vote who could. People should of course have the right to decide, whether or not that is always take into account or not.
"The official result from the Autonomous Republic of Crimea was a 96.77 percent vote for integration of the region into the Russian Federation with an 83.1 percent voter turnout". From wiki so who knows.
Nothing tricky about it. They want to be British, they are British. The rest is hysterical historical same old . . . They were in no doubt. I never walked onto a football pitch with the intent to harm someone; I'd make an exception with the Argentine team.
Falkland Islands are a beautiful fantastic land, I've been lucky enough to visit on many occasions. They tend lovingly to our war graves, they speak fondly of servicemen past and present they love Sunday roasts and they love singing Auld Lang Syne at New Year, how much more British can you get. Why can't these people be left alone to make their decisions, which is clearly We Wanna Be British!
Because a volatile troubled country such as Argentina uses it as popular unifying cause to distract its unsophisticated electorate from its own inadequacies and failings. Let's hope it doesn't turn the rest of S America like in 1970 when they used Sir Alf's 'Animals' quote to rally the locals against our team.
The Spanish want Gibraltar but wont give up their tiny enclaves in Morocco The Ukraine wants Crimea back although it was part of Russia long before it recently became part of Ukraine The French would like the Channel Islands but have no problem holding onto Miquelon and St. Pierre in Canada Part of the official country of France is in South America Rockall is officially now considered not to be an island but exactly what it is, a rock....formerly claimed by Denmark Ireland, UK and Norway. Apparently whoever clung to its side to claim it for UK received a visit from a helicopter dropping him leaflets of welcome and interesting things to do and see from the Irish Tourist Board!!! Cyprus is split in two with little indication of any resolution forthcoming. Quebec continuously states that it will go independent, unless of course they get a bigger share of national funds courtesy of provinces like oil-rich Alberta. Northern Ireland is a complete basket case. Northern Italy tends to align itself racially and culturally more with its neighbourhood germanic brethern than it does with the Neapolitans and Sicilians. Mandarin-speaking Beijing residents can only converse with Hong Kong Cantonese speakers through the medium of English. Many countries are just concepts created by their former overlords - Iraq, Nigeria etc The Isle of Man is not part of the European Union Greenland is/is not Danish? Puerto Ricans do/do not have all the rights of any citizen of the USA? Now - does the Falklands rely heavily on Argentina for communications, serious healthcare conditions, sea rescue, post-primary education etc? If yes, then maybe they should consider their position. If not, and if it is not an economic drain on UK, then no need. Is it really just a strategic post to eye on Latin America? Think Cuba back in the sixties. If the Irish donated a coastal island to the Argies or the Ruskies or the Chinese to keep an eye on UK, would you feel particularly comfortable? China in dispute with Japan over uninhabited islands China in dispute with Vietnam over territorial waters. China unwilling to truly recognize Taiwan It goes on and on. Didn't the Americans wish to convert Granada into a parking lot, such was the mighty threat it posed!!
I just don't understand why we would be interested in the oil rich Falklands. http://www.economist.com/blogs/americasview/2014/02/oil-and-gas-falklands
I bet they argued the toss out of it with everyone else on Internet messageboards though? Was one of them called Happy Argentine?
Don't be a ****. I've spent a fair amount of time down there, so at least I'd know what I was talking about if I decided to talk about the place or the people that live there. You on the other hand, Google. So, I repeat, don't be a ****.
Well, you've heard Happy. I guess us who haven't been to the Falklands better **** off from the thread then. Obviously we can't know anything properly about it because we've never been there. You ****er.
No idea what you're on about there. I could have picked Chazz or Craig, but your name just fit better. The fact you previously fought in the Falklands in the RAF is nothing to do with it.
