I think Rosbergs dad proved the first two don't really matter. If you ever had the choice of which of those 3 things you'd want then luck would be at the top.
Surmising here but degradation may have been higher but not a concern as long as the rear braking assist from the KERS was in place. As soon as that was lost, lights out. Not particularly "bad management" from Hamilton as he cant drive every race thinking this might be the one where the KERS lets go, but could certainly go some way to explaining why the severity of the problem was more immediate for Hamilton when they both suffered the same KERS failure
Vettel might have been a slightly fortunate championship winner in 2010 with him winning it at the last race due to Red Bull getting it wrong for Webber, and it would have been interesting how close it would have been in 2012 if Hamilton, probably driving his best season ever hadn't suffered mechanical issues and brain farts by McLaren but fortunate to win 4 drivers championships, not really.
you say all that like it's a bad thing. Not everyone wants Hamilton to win every race, Rosberg and mechanical problems are the only thing preventing that even more dull than last year scenario. I wouldn't worry though i'm sure they'll be plenty of yawn inducing Hamilton processions for you to "enjoy" this year.
I think there will be more retirements for the same thing to come, and it'll happen when Rosberg leads Hamilton. Rosberg is fairly content with 2nds and won't push too much to get past Hamilton, but Hamilton will push Rosberg as he's desperate to get past him and tends to forget the long haul for the immediate rush, I think he pushed Rosberg more than his car could take and Rosberg in defense did the same thing. It's not unusual for a component with an inherent design defect to go break when exposed to similar treatment. I hope it is a design defect because it'll rein in the Mercs for the others to challenge, sadly though, even if it is, there aren't enough circuits that will hammer the brakes so much as to make a difference.
Here you are. In a roundabout way David Coulthard agrees with you. Actually, it's pretty self-evident isn't it? But whether it is a good thing or bad thing is a moot point. Personally, I would rather see the best man win in the end, so if things continue as they are, I hope the luck evens itself out. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/formula1/27771899 PS. Ham is 22 points behind. If he had won both races in which he DNF'ed (which is likely) he would have 50 more points and Rosberg would have 14 less. By my dodgy maths this would put Ham 42 points in the lead at this stage without the DNFs. This would mean he was well on the way the crushing the hell out of everybody. Even as a Hamilton fan perhaps this would not have been a good thing for championship!
Hamilton has peaks and troughs where as Rosberg is very constant. In the end they meet in the middle. neither are the better driver they are both equal but in unequal ways. If unreliability comes into it then Rosberg is the better bet
Thing is, I don't think Ham is as peaky and troughy as in former years. And with the Merc car advantage, a trough like the occasional Monaco weekend isn't likely to result in less than second place. So barring mechanical failures, i would expect him to prevail convincingly in the end.
Luck tends to balance itself out, although not always (2012!). I think this season depends on if any of the others manage to catch up as with the Mercedes out front I can see Rosberg grabbing consistent high points. If another team catches and starts to mix with Mercedes then in my mind Rosberg is not as good at dealing with having to battle than Hamilton is. Canada was supposed to be a Hamilton track yet Rosberg beat him in qualifying fair and square, and in the race... who knows? Barcelona was supposed to be a Rosberg track yet look what happened there. Despite the races being predictable they also are somewhat unpredictable in a weird way.
Well as the majority opinion seems to be that Rosberg is not in fact leading through better luck that means it should all come down to merit again this weekend.
