I'm not sure that The Young Ones has aged that well, but in the early '80s it was like nothing else. Anarchic, rude, sweary and tangential. In a time when there was only 3 channels it was must watch TV. It was the only time we stayed in to watch telly and not go to the pub. Bits of furniture spoke, cut aways to irrelevant scenes, live band performances, anything could happen. All held together by 3 great acting performances (and Mike), of which Mayall was the best. He will be long remembered.
you're 4 minutes early!! Its only 4 minutes!! Tell that to Roger Bannister. The baninister speaks.... RIP Rick
Kevin Turvey :The man behind the green door is worth searching out too & the Dangerous brothers from Friday/Saturday live.R.I.P. Rik.
I think all of S1 and 2 are great. But particular mention for The Gas Man episode. "We don't use gas because we don't know what it is" RIP Rik Mayall - a true talent.
Gutted about this, he was excellent. I loved Bottom as a kid and it still makes me piss myself laughing now. RIP Rik Rik in Man Down
Drop dead fred is my kids favourite film of all time they must have watched it 100 times at least and they are only 7 and 11 yrs old . I cant believe how gutted i am . R.I.P Rick.
Cheers. The only bit I remember was an episode where they went on TVAM. Will have to track it down and re-watch it at some point.
Fortunate enough to him perform Bottom live a few times. Fantastic comic genius who gave the hecklers as good as he got 'the ****er'! A true comic legend, I'm more gutted than I thought I would be. RIP
Ade Edmondson has paid tribute. "There were times when Rik and I were writing together when we almost died laughing. They were some of the most carefree, stupid days I ever had, and I feel privileged to have shared them with him." "And now he's died for real. Without me. Selfish bastard."
Hitting him on the head with that frying pan so many times will not have helped. Comic Genius. Sadly missed.
My post should have read 'Alexei' not Alex of course. You're right Imperial, Bobby Chariot was one of his 90s inventions. If you check out Sayle's blog he reveals how that character came about. Back 1980/81 he did straight stand up and compered some of the nights. He started the act with 'Hello any Albianians in?...no, well there was this ****ing Albanian walking down the street... etc etc'. Rik & Ade worked as 20th Century Coyote and included their Dangerous Brothers routine. I thought my lungs were going to burst. French & Saunders were also a part of the evening and did a routine about two American women comparing orgasms ... all very funny stuff.
