Back when we first got it, it was of great strategical importance, Spain had what is now Argentina as a stopping point, we had nothing and the Panama canal never existed, and its a hell of a long way round to get to the pacific and countries on that coast.

Problem is if we just give it up now. It will he a kick in the teeth to all the servicemen that liberated it in the 80s and the citizens that live there, if it does get heated again then I believe we will defend it again.

That's why we're stuck with it plus the fact that the islanders know where their bread's buttered.

We had the chance to punt it and hesitated until the chance was gone.

I keep hearing about the 'massive oil reserves' etc but I have my doubts .......... I reckon it's bullshit to justify what we fork out every year.

    Could be wrong though.

Smug my memory is not the best, but from what I recall (reported in the press at the time) the oil reserves are massive but logistically it would cost us as much to get the oil out of the ground (sea) as we would make from selling it, so the talks with the original Junta were about a joint enterprise. The second Junta took control of Argentina and invaded the Islands.

Sadly, our only logical client would be the Argentinians <doh>

Plus there'd be hell on if there was a massive spillage and Antarctica was ****ed up.

I also can't see how you could install the necessary equipment, infrastructure and workforce without 'ruining' the islands.

I am sure I read somewhere recently that Brazil are claiming ownership of the sea routes in the South Atlantic because of the expected traffic linked to the oil.

    tut tut ......

i stopped arguing because it became clear that it was a battle of wits with an unarmed opponent .

    example ...

" Sadly, our only logical client would be the Argentinians "

yeah because Saudi and Iran et all , dont ship their oil all over the world , just to the nearest country .

    <doh>

The comment about the oil client was tongue in cheek as anyone with a brain would realise.

As was, "I just wish we'd hung onto Corsica instead ....... easier to get to, beautiful country and fantastic local food & wine

Instead we're stuck with a desolate bunch of rocks, in the middle of nowhere, with more sheep than potential boyfriends."

Or do you believe everything that's said on here, between people who know each other, is supposed to be 100% factual?

I have heard of an oil tanker, which in your case is quite appropriate rhyming slang <ok>

It's obvious that, if we continue as things stand and take the oil Argentina wouldn't actually be a client.

Don't get carried away with yourself, your comments about only gaining land through blood shows how deluded you are.

You couldn't even manage any kind of response to the Scottish referendum which says a lot about you.

Would don't need Argentina involved at all as it stands, but it would make it easier if they came on board, and as it is a political football :emoticon-0111-blush, a compromise involving others, Chile, Brazil etc. could do wonders for our standing in the region while still protecting our interests, and the Fallkland Islanders rights of self determination, Jaw jaw not war war.

On a separate note, in a common sense world with the problem of global warming undoubtedly going to cause the biggest test so far for the future existence of humanity, what the hell are we still looking for new sources in which to make matters worse. Every nation in the world should be getting together to find ways of phasing out the use of fossil fuels..

A bit like those IRA supporting ****ers in Boston Massachewsets. (sic)
Those fat, stinking Yank ****s couldn't point Northern Ireland out on a world map yet still pour money into 'the cause.'
Several British governments slagged of Gadaffi Duck for dealing with the provo's & yet all sucked the cocks of the worlds biggest doners to the IRA.
Yes, the good old United States, the world's police force.
And I'm not just talking about money, I'm talking about weapons as well. From our supposedly biggest allies.
I wouldn't piss on the USA if it went up in flames & their soldiers are ****e, I'm on a rant & roll now.
I can't ****ing stand the bastards & the way we lick their arses. The Yanks will do nothing for anybody unless it benefits them.
We might as well be the 51st state & fly the ****ing stars & stripes above Buckinghan poxy Palace.

They bleat on like **** about how they saved the day in WW2 & single handedly won it.
Kiss my arse, had the Jappa's not took out the fleet at Pearl Harbour they would never even entered the war as prior to that they were none aligned.
**** Britain, let them get on with it & furthermore while I'm on, just prior to WW1 the bastards were planning to go to war with us!
It was only the outbreak of the war that scuppered their plans.
And I'll tel you summat else, if there was ever an organisation that deserved to be wiped out by .50 cal machine guns it's that ****ing Noraid.
I ****ing detest the USA, just in case anybody was in any doubt.

Off track I know & I apologise for that, it was just something Smug said that made me think of all this.
Rant over, Billy's back to normal - for now.

Oh aye, forgot to mention, when we were at war with Argentina over the Falklands, the USA never even broke off relations with them. <ok>
And another thing, our ships were flattened by extocet missiles made by those white flag waving twats the Frogs.

Is this like an Andy Murray scenario - if Argentina win the WC then the islanders will claim to be argentine - if not then they're british - as in if Murray is **** he's scottish?

I must admit I read more than write, here. I am not often on the same wavelength as Billy C to be honest.
But Billy boy - that was one spot (though off topic) contribution.
    Well put Billy ;)

Well I'll tell you something mate, the Yanks kick things off that they can't ****ing finish.
What do they do then? I'll tell you what they do, they call out their pet pit bulls to help them out - us!
It just ****s me off the way we are there for them at the drop of a hat.
I mean let's face it, we lost more men in the first Gulf War to American friendly fire than we did to the Iraqi's.
Friendly fire, wtf's that all about? I'm telling you man, they're ****ing useless, I've worked with them before & they haven't a clue what they're doing or even where they are half the time.
Austrailians & Canadians on the other hand - different kettle of fish.
Two countries that never poke their beaks in to other peoples business but always commit troops to UN forces.
I loved those guys, ****ing good lads & they never feel the need to big themselves up, they just get on with it.
The Seth Affikkans to, they were the strangest, funniest ****ers I ever met & always won the shooting competitions we used to have, top lads with the weirdest accent ever, lol.
'Yer men Bill, shut the fekkin antilope & we'll hev our denner.' Mad as hatters but great lads.
