I think everyone on this thread is incorrect, obviously about to be burned on this one, but isn't it the best XI based on world cup performances? So players like miroslav klose should really get a mention? Zidane should be exempt as he completely ruined France's chances with the sending off vs Italy? As should many an England player for only succeeding in the one world cup, failing in others they played in.......or am I reading too much into this?
You do realise he near enough single handedly got them to the final in 2006 in the first place, don't you? Scored in the quarter final, the winner in the semi final, and scored their goal in the final? And won player of the tournament? And was the star of 1998 World Cup winning side, scoring twice in the final? And won player of the tournament that year too? To exempt Zizou would be downright stupid.
Zidane was one of the first in my side. Played a massive part in France winning the World Cup in 98 and also played a huge part in putting an unfancied French team in the final 06.
He was the first in mine, alongside Maldini. Though him being my fave player ever might have put some bias into that decision...
I did think I'd be controversial. I admit it was a poor example now I think about it, but I'm tired! Just wanted to focus more on actual world cup performances than their club reputation apologies.
You're correct. It was not made clear whether players get selected on actual performances in in WC games ....or just reputations.
If I were French, I'd have been furious. But I'm not, and the fact that it helped to cost the French a World Cup just makes it even better for me. Bloody hilarious.
Only going to include players that i've seen and can remember seeing to keep it my opinion Buffon Cafu Cannavaro Thuram Maldini Zidane Ronaldinho Figo Sneijder Ronaldo (big boned) Klose For their performances at international rather than club, so no CR7 or Messi
I always have thought Figo was pretty naff at World Cups and Sneijder was great at the last one, but average in 2006.
