Does anyone know anything about Calum Davenport? i know he suffered stab wounds some time back and was i think released by West Ham because of it, but is he still playing? i remember when he played that loan match for us (had that neck injury early on) he looked the part then. I was wondering if he was unattached if SD might look at him on a on a pay as you play type of deal, might be good for both parties, think he would still be in his twenties.
I think he went on trial at Leeds last year but didn't work out... I then think he played some non-league team just for some fitness but no-one has signed him up as yet! Might be worth inviting him to train if he is local and see how he gets on, but does sound like he isn't on anyone's radar.
He plays for Wotton Blue Cross in the United Counties league or something like that - they are near Bedford - Don't know if he is registered for next season - also don't know if he will ever be fully fit again.
Thanks for the updates,it suggests he is local and maybe might be worth inviting for pre-season training on a no strings basis as he should have the hunger to get back?
Might be worth a go, but would suggest centre-back is the one area we don't need strengthening, with Maps and Taylor first choice and Bennett as back up. Could always get him as 3rd choice and loan Bennett for first team experience somewhere else.... but would he come here as just a back-up?
He was a player who could bring the ball/ pass the ball out of defence. Would add experience and who hopefully would not be to greedy on wage front now. We would be a big step up from non league but of course would depend on his physical abilities now. Might see it as away of putting himself into the shop window again though?
Would be a good idea to have a look, but for all we know, we could be after someone else with more experience.
He was totally unfit when with Leeds and I gather he wasn't even playing regularly for Wootton. Sad waste of a career.
When the detail came out it wasn't pretty. First, that game against Charlton - 44th min corner, Majid Bougherra stamps on his chest with his studs. "Majic" seems to have a bit of a fan club who overlook his dedicated thuggishness - one nasty player. Then with time on his hands his brother in law believes Calum is getting physical with his missus hence the stabbing and the court case. His football career has stalled since then and I'd heard he was playing non league in the Bedfors area, where he's living with his mother. Would I take a chance on bringing him back through approx 6 levels of football? Not sure as he has dropped a long way from West Ham. Watford are holding trials at the training ground, its what happens at this time of year, personally I would overlook him.
Yes Chris he is playing in the United Counties 1st div - a full 8 levels below us. He must been in a terrible traumatic state!
So right, Elixir. Stamped on an obviously injured player, sees the neckbrace fitted, player carried off etc., yet still found time to v-sign the Rookery when he was substituted. The piece of filth.
Sorry that is a no go, he is not fit and has only played 1 game for Wooten in which he had a shocker and they lost 4 0, so I dont think he is to the necessary standard
So sad what happened to Calum Davenport both on and off the pitch. Both the players and the club have nothing to lose if we invited him for a trial. If he does well we have a new centre back, if not we send him kindly on his way. Imagine the boost it would give for Calum if we offered him a trial, it would give him a bit more confidence back in his life to know that he has a slight chance of playing at the level he used to. But in the world of football is there any room for sentimentality?
