I've signed it OLM and sent it to Ken Scott the producer he worked with with during the Bowie years I actually MC'd the Sunday opening of the Mick Ronson stage back in 1997, but still never felt it to be a proper memorial. On Wednesday night I hosted the former Beatles, Lou Reed, Bowie, Supertramp, Devo, Tubes etc engineer and producer Ken Scott at my gaff, to a mix of students, colleagues and guests. It was a really super, indeed an absolutely electric event. There was even another member of this forum present (just in case anyone thinks I am making it up). Privately Ken told me how much he personally liked and appreciated Mick Ronson as a person and a musician and indeed all the Spiders. He said during his talk that without Mick Ronson, David Bowie wouldn't have been where he is now. As much as I am a massive fan of the Great Dame, I am actually inclined to agree. Ken Played the separate instrument/stems/tracks that made up the song Life On Mars. I must admit that when I heard Trevor's bass and Mick's guitar it was emotional enough, but when I heard Ronno's beautiful string arrangement just on its own - a little tear fell down my face. Magical stuff. Right Hull CC, FFS get something done to celebrate the life of one of Hull's best musicians, a man who has contributed to popular culture and leaves a legacy of great work. He's one of ours, a Hullensian, someone who actually made people happy. GET IT DONE!!!
The other person from this board that Lincoln mentions was me and I'm most grateful to him for the invite, it was really interesting to hear the thoughts of a producer who's worked on some of the most influential music the world has ever heard. Though he was very humble, even mildly embarrassed about all the comments from the audience about him being responsible for the 'soundtrack of their lives'. I echo Lincoln's comments on the Life On Mars section, it was really moving hearing the bass, lead, drums, strings and vocals all played in isolation, they really were talented lads.
I just felt like i was there after hearing all about it in pub last night...... Didnt get a bloody invite to it tho!!
The thing Ronno doesn't get credit for is the arrangements on Bowie's work and the Lou Reed Transformer album. As well as been a killer guitar playing, but could play virtually play any other instrument. Two of my favourite music moments are the strings on Perfect Day and the solo in Moonage Daydream. Both from a kid brought up on Greatfield.
Burnsy said that something is in the air on this issue. Maybe David Bowie can come and unveil whatever it is ?
So good... His solo starts from about 3:27 and lasts for the rest of the vid.
Wasn't there a story about Hull getting an arena for gigs and the like? Should be named after him, makes sense doesn't it.
It blows me away every time. Width Of Circle is epic too. The legato at the beginning is fantastic too.
And just for anyone who thinks you can't play a solo on a bass guitar...
More of the Ronster - with another Hull link:
Hi Stan I don't know if you have ever seen this, but this is the film trailer for Ronno's debut album (see my avatar folks)...not quite a set of music tracks but despite the poor quality worth seeing here!
I did mention it was happening, you could have asked! Though apologies for not making it clearer mate! I promise next time to let you know in advance and lay on the Limo and the red carpet for you! The Limo may contain champers and a 'mucky berd' to serve it!
The kid who set up the petition wrote this on Mick Ronson Club Facebook wall after meeting the council about a proper tribute to the Spiders. It was decided that a plaza in the middle of queens gardens incorporating the spirit of the spiders. The whole of the gardens will be getting an overhaul with all paths leading to a focal point which is the memorial. I just need confirmation from Trevs family and Woody to give to the councillors to get the ok. There just needs to be a decision of what to put on the Plaza.
Are you a member on that page? If you are, can you tell them I've just forwarded his message to Trev's family and I'm sure they'll agree and sort things with Woody, or I can drop Woody a line if required.
I am OLM so if he doesn't I will. Incidentally, I posted up the remembrance of Trev's passing on that forum and on the Bowie forum and it got stacks and stacks of likes, comments and real appreciation for our old friend...some very touching.
Nice one, cheers LT. A load of us went to the grave on the first anniversary, his headstone had just gone up, so we christened it with half a bottle of merlot.
It's a small world, turns out that admin on Ronno's page is an old mate. I've now joined and let them know I'll get them the approval they need.
