I think £2m is actually a really low price for potential sponsors when you consider the exposure of the premier league. A large firm will spend hundreds of thousands on standard billboard campaigns so advertising which billions of people across the world will see for large periods of time every week is relatively cheap.
"The new home shirt to be worn by Cambridge United in the 2010/11 season has been officially unveiled, and sees the return to the club’s traditional amber pantone colour. The shirt had a black detail on the bottom part of the collar, which stretches to a thin stripe on the left sleeve. There are also thin black stripes on the sides and on the right sleeve. Greene King IPA sponsors the shirts, while the logo of new manufacturers Errea is placed on the right side of the chest." Beware of non league imitations and retro crap.
True, but the stature of our club isn't as big as some others. People complained that we had Cash Converters on the front of our shirts, but if we got a gambling company, like Bet365 or SBOBet, would people then complain that we're encouraging gambling? Did we have this issue when we took Totesport on?
Even if we people are not as interested in us as they are in Arsenal they will still be forced to see the brand on our shirts when watching the teams they support, obviously it isn't as valuable as sponsoring the bigger teams but still well worth it IMO. I would certainly differentiate Gambling from Payday loans. Gambling can be damaging if there is addiction but for the majority is simply an enjoyable past time. Payday loans on the other hand are set up to be exploitative of the poorest and most vulnerable in society.
That's fair enough and you're right, they aren't exactly favourable towards those less fortunate. But with regards to gambling I was referring to the influence of it on younger supporters. It's like if we were given a £5m sponsorship from Benson and Hedges, people would kick off that we were promoting smoking (of course, this wouldn't happen as I'm pretty sure tobacco advertising is severly restricted in this country).
Surely white with some blue in it is white and blue? On your logic Real Madrid's shirts are blue and white.
Ok you win, you're more pedantic than me! I should have put them the other way around, I agree. Either way, its not just white, its the City Groups corporate branding colours, not just white.
Erm, I know you are, you said you are, but what am I? Thanks for your contribution to this thread, you're awesome buddy!
Is shirt sponsorship actually that effective? Companies wouldn't throw the sums that they do at clubs if it wasn't but have you ever looked a Liverpool shirt and thought "**** I really need to sort out my investments through Standard Chartered?" And does a company as large as that really need to raise their profile through shirt deals? Has anyone actually bought anything purely because of its association with City? I spent money in tote sport when they were our sponsors because they were the only option inside the KC, not out of loyalty. I used Cashcovertors to get rid of some old DVDs but would have happily gone elsewhere, it was just convenient but I can hand on heart say that I have never purchased a shipping container from IBC, never done a degree at Hull Uni and never taken out a credit card with Sportscard.
If you're going that far down the pyramid, then you'd also have to consider Hyde, whose nickname is The Tigers. Nothing is truly unique when there's so many thousands of clubs. Thankfully it means **** all. Regarding that sponsorship pack, how pathetic that they even stuck a 'stable and successful ownership' bullet in there. You just know Assem will have insisted on that. Such a self-congratulatory ****.
It is,however, a case of back to the future for the name Melbourne City Football Club. It was founded in 1912 and played Aussie Rules until 1913 before disbanding after failing to win a single game.
Two different clubs. Melbourne University Football Club was founded years before Melbourne City and played in the VFL. Melbourne City Football Club never played in the VFL playing for 2 seasons in the VFA.
Shirt sponsorship isn't exactly about getting individual consumers to buy a product or service, it's all about brand awareness and brand penetration and gaining a "share of mind" in the marketplace. Marketing types place great importance on such concepts.
