Wages, house prices, debts, costs... What’s the best way to tell how well off a place is and who are the winners and losers when you do?

Well, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has just released information that offers a new window on the richest and poorest parts of Britain – using the yardstick of how much money people have left over once their essential costs are met.

Gross Disposable Household Income - the measure used by the ONS - looks at how much money people have left for spending or saving after essential costs like taxes have been taken into account.

The latest figures show that residents the richest area in the UK have more than three times as much spare cash as those in the poorest – while regionally there’s an average gap of more than £10,000 a person between the best and worst off places to live in Britain.
[See how your area compares with this interactive map]
    Where’s richest?
The richest place in the UK in terms of disposable income is Inner London West at £36,963 spare cash per person – hardly surprising as this area contains places such as Kensington and Chelsea.

Overall, London has the largest share of disposable income of anywhere in the UK at 16.7% - that’s double Scotland’s share and almost seven times as much as Northern Ireland.

Disposable income is growing fastest in the North East, however, where it’s 4% higher than the year before at £14,393 a person. But the region has a long way to go to catch up with London overall – where disposable income is £21,446 per head on average.

Top five local areas for dispoable income
    Inner London - West £36,963
    Surrey £23,672
    Buckinghamshire CC £22,503
    Hertfordshire £20,642
    Outer London - South £20,543
    Where’s poorest?
Northern Ireland is the poorest region in the UK according to average disposable income per person, at £13,902 a head, followed by the North East, Wales and then the West Midlands.

But the poorest place comes from none of those regions. Nottingham ranked dead last in terms of disposable income per person according to the ONS – at £11,411 per person. Leicester, Blackburn and Darwen and Hull were then next three poorest places in the UK.

Bottom five local areas for dispoable income
West and South of Northern Ireland £12,605
Kingston upon Hull, City of £12,250
    Blackburn with Darwen £11,582
    Leicester £11,539
    Nottingham £11,411

That's disposable personal income you're referring to Marcus, the figure these lot are working with is income after Income Tax and NI has been taken, basically your take home pay for the year.

Basically it indicates that the poorest person has £950 a month to pay for their lives from month to month.
