I thought he went cos a pro contract was on the table.

In this case, it seems he went cos our set up was small time.

Not that up on our youth set up, but I’m supposing one of the young Welsh kids has signed for Swansea.

I also suppose that this will be the case for the next few years until (if ever) our set up catches up.

But, my question is, that given that our youth set up is reputedly so poor, do we ever net any youngster who is actually that good to be poached from us anyway?

Essentially, is the loss of Cardwell or the other kid, likely to be an actual loss?

So, until we are root and branch equals of the others around us so we can compete for the promising youngsters, apart from the really odd exception, will we ever have anything really worth nicking?

    The kid was a local.

He's upping sticks 230 miles to join a club of a similar stature but he'll be playing against Arsenal and Chelsea youth not the modest local clubs our youth have to play.

Not rubbishing the Allams for this. It's a long term fault.

But we are perceived as a fur coat and no knickers operation by discerning youngsters and their parents, and they will look to move on at the first chance they get.

I only thought we had Welsh internationals along with Clark – so I suppose I was just emphasising my previously stated ignorance about our youth players.

But my question remains, until all of it ‘catches up’ do we genuinely have anything worth nicking?

Its a good question. I reckon potentially we have good young players, we must do. I just dont believe our coaching set up is good enough and i dont think there has ever been any interest in the youth from any of our managers for years. I doubt Taylor or Brown ever went to Ideal Standard.

The coaches there just seem to have been left to get on with it. How can young kids see any chance of progress they dont even train at the same place as the first team squad.

I was talking to a lad, mid twenties, whose brother went through the ranks at City. He was begging Russellto go out on loan at 18 19 20. Russell either had no idea how to facilitate that or his pleas to higher ups fell on deaf ears.

If one of our kids (the two 'welsh' ones are local to all intents and purposes) makes it to the first team squad that's a massive help in FFP.

Not sure if he counts as 'homegrown' for his new club even if he is joining them at academy level.

I'm guessing giving these contracts is to meet that Europa League criteria?

If so, that’s a tragic situation.

In fairness, I admittedly am not familiar with the process or practices but it seems incredulous to think that an established youth coach at a professional club, even if with modest resources, would not be able to facilitate what I would assume to be a fundamental function.

The worst aspect is that it’s young people’s lives and future being ****ed around with here.

With a lack of resources you expect things to be of a lower tech, less coaches to staff ratio etc and a somewhat spartan setting, but you’d still expect the chance to grow, the chance to learn and the chance to become what you’ve worked hard to be.

Didn’t realise it had an impact on FFP either.

Max Clark is 6 months younger than Luke Shaw. Both played for England youth. Clark captained England at U16's has played at U17 and U18 level. Shaw has now completed 2 nigh on full seasons in the premier league. I dont think Clark has even been on the bench for us.

    There is something wrong there.

There is something wrong, but it is not the development of the players, it is the scarcity of them at national youth level. There is scant opportunity to have a go, at the right levels, and be allowed to make your name or your mistakes. Too much is reliant on the Alf Tupper myth, when what we need is professionalism without the crazy money.

I see fewer and fewer young players, in fact, players of any age, mixing with the punters; tosspots and no-marks think they are a cut above and it's all down to money - money they can't handle. It's a piss-poor game and it's creating a bigger percentage of piss-poor people: players, coaches, owners, add-ons, media and every other form of miscreant you care to mention; it's all a personal thing, in that you continue to pay your dosh or you say no, but that's not what it should be about.

Leon, a lack of perspective and investment has resulted in where we are; as much as I will slate the current owners for some things, this is a legacy. Those young people's parents know what they are doing (sic).
