I hope those getting in a state over this weren't amongst those announcing they were going to have a party following the death of an old woman and posting links to songs celebrating her death?
    Dual standards and hypocrisy indeed.

Although no one here has made light of the fact someone has died. Only the reactions of some folk. Those rushing to post in a state of high dudgeon were in such a rush to be offended that they must have missed that.

I thought some of the 'jokes' on this thread were insensitive and yes I celebrated the death of an old woman by beeping my horn relentlessly when Radio 4 announced it. If this bloke who has died turns out to have single handedly destroyed large swathes of proud communities through the closure of blue collar industry and was responsible for the needless killing of thousands over a war with no more point than boosting public opinion ahead of an election, then I'll take it all back and say he deserved it.

Which war was that then? Can't have been one caused by someone invading our territory as you say it was needless. Can't have been the Falklands anyway as around 255 British and 635 Argentines died in the Falklands War and the one you refer to resulted in the killing of thousands. So which one was it?
No doubt you will honk your horn even more when Blair goes as he has been responsible for far more deaths.
And, BTW, more miners were made redundant under Labour governments than Tory ones.

Still, carry on with your hypocrisy and double standards.

Yes I did mean the Falklands. Do you not think if Argentina had soverignty over the Isle of Wight we might consider it ours and take it back? Youve got me on the maths though, i was 110 short of a thousand. I shouldve said killed and wounded.

Who mentioned miners? And who mentioned political parties?

Yes I will celebrate when Blair dies. I dont know at what point you thought I wouldnt?

No hypocrisy or double standards - as I said if the guy from last night turns out to be a rabid despot then I'll take back my comments from this morning.

Glad to clear this up for you.

He died a decade before I was born, I didnt own a car until 1996 and I have unwavering respect for a man who fought to preserve freedom for a whole nation, nay continent. Where I'm funny is when a leader recording the lowest opinion poll rating in UK politics history taking us to war over an island of 3000 people 8000 miles from us and probably a couple of hundred miles off the coast of the 'invading' nation and suddenley emerging a hero / heroine (is that sexist in the way that we dont say actress or WPC now?).

But other than that good point.

So, by saying thousands when it was less than one thousand, you were thousands out. Not a great advert for your accuracy regarding numbers is it?

Argentina didn't exist as a country when the Falklands were discovered and subsequently occupied by a number of countries. So your analogy regarding the Isle of Wight is irrelevant.especially the Isle of Wight is slap next door to our country, unlike the Falklands in relation to Argentina.

The miners is relevant as you brought up destroying jobs. The biggest conflict in her time came with the miners yet Labour made more miners redundant.

Referring to someone who was democratically elected in a free election as a despot is rather silly. A despot is someone with absolute authority who cannot be removed by peaceful means. Like Stalin or Mao. Or General Galtieri.

We're great in wars, it's one of the few things we're still world leaders in, I think we should have more of them.

Is that the leader who was elected with a higher percentage of the vote 3 years before the Falklands war with a higher percentage of the vote than any in any election since?
Blair lead us into more conflicts than any other leader.

Why do you keep bringing Blair into it? it would be relevant if I ever said I was a fan of his. But I'm not ergo I havent.

And I never mentioned the vote in the election pre the Falklands either.

    It really is rather odd.

You were saying she went to war to bolster her popularity. She had got in with a larger percentage of the vote than anyone for some time previously and higher than any since. As you showed with your thousands killed when it was less than one thousand figures are not your strong point. She made a lot of mistakes but at least be accurate about things.

I never said she didnt get in with that. I said befoe the war she had the lowest opinion poll rating in the history of UK politics. This is entirely accurate.

I already said I shouldve said killed and wounded for the thousands so I dont know why you keep labouring that point. I dont know what more I can say on that one - I was wrong, I said it. Where else do you want me to go with it?
