I don't think Ashley will let us get relegated. He isn't the sort to let his assets devalue. If we were relegated, you can be sure that he wouldn't sell until we'd been promoted again, and that he would spend the money needed to get us promoted.

He's already managed it once. But you are probably right in that it wouldn't result in his selling.

I disagree, I think it's the only scenario that will see him sell up. He will not dip into his pockets for this club and once he realises he cannot skim off the top and still be in the PL, he'll fck off. He can't keep loaning the club money else he'll never see it again. One relegation, he'll be gone. For good or ill, I'll add.

He'll never sell up while his pockets are filling up. He's like a drug dealer but with stupider customers. At least a druggy would stop paying for ****e drugs and get his fix elsewhere.

Of course he would wait until we were promoted before selling. It would probably wipe £100m off the value of the club, selling in the Championship. He will not sell the club at a loss. That is one of the reasons he's still here, as no one will pay over the £263m he has invested in the club. Failing an Arab with more money than sense coming in, I think Ashley will be looking to offset the selling price by about £100m+ of retained profit and have us making about £20m/year. Then the selling price may start to look okay to potential investors. That theory, to me, is still as much of a possibility of what is going on as the 'Ashley is trousering the profit and just wants an advertising vehicle' theory. The fact is he can't sell now even if he wants to.

    This.

The club has money to avoid relegation/buy its way out of the Championship if need be. MA would like to spend as little of it as possible for the reasons set out above. He will spend what he has to, however, to keep us in/get us back to the Premiership because of the enormous effect that has on the value of the club and because it is necessary to secure the revenue stream which makes recouping his investment possible.

Ings perhaps, McCormack no thanks. The thing is, just because these guy's score goals in the Championship, doesn't mean they will get any goals in the Premier league. Nugent for example, most of his goals he will get next season will be from the pen spot as he won't be getting any other goals save the odd scrappy tap in.

Says McCormack has 3 years left on his deal. Sounds like even HE knows he's not better than Leeds United. I cannot see for the life of me how the powers that be at NUFC will sanction an £8m deal for an unproven, lower-Championship level striker who turns 28 soon. It's more a kind of "preparing for relegation" signing, if it wasn't so overpriced. Are we really saying that the World has no better options at £8m than this guy?? Isn't Gomis free? Not that I like him, but he's played Champions League and International Football and is £8m less.

I'm not saying McCormack is the answer, but then again I don't want Gomis anywhere near Tyneside either.
Players like McCormack aren't given chances at the higher level mainly because of the cheap imports.

Think RICKIE LAMBERT - overlooked time and time again by PL Clubs.
    Look at him now.
Its this utter b******* with cheap foreign s**** that's bringing English Football to its knees.

Look at us, is Gouffran better than half the forwards in the Championship, McCormack, Austin, Rhodes etc. I think NOT.

Lambert is an anomally. They are scoring goals in the Championship granted but that doesn't mean they will do that in the Premiership. For every Lambert there are scores that fall by the wayside.

The way you feel about apparent 'Cheap foreign ****' is the same way I feel about overrated and over priced English talent.

It is very true. We have somehow developed this mentality that if you are foreign you are better. Its utter bollocks. Their best players are undoubtedly better than our best players. The next level not so much, and so on. The Gouf is a prime example. Decent player but nothing you couldn't have picked up from lower down the leagues. Most of the time these players just need a chance and better coaching. I have no problem with the top foreign playes, we all like to watch them. However it is the saturation with average foreign players no better than what is available on these shores. I'm not even sure the argument around fees stacks up to be honest. I have previously listed loads of English players bought for reasonable fees who have gone on to be more than useful at the PL level.

Ings for me, just to remove some of Burnley's teeth and ensure they're beneath us in the relegation scrap.

In some genuinely exciting news, Siem De Jong is actually quoted as being in contact with the club. Now this I like, it's the first real positive of the window. No problem signing a Colback if he's joined by De Jong - and it's not 'cos he's foreign, he's just genuinely a good player. Christian Eriksen seemed to adapt to the PL pretty well, and SDJ is a more solid unit.

Transfer News: Newcastle close on transfer deals for Jack Colback and Ayoze Perez

Sky Sports understands that Newcastle United are in advanced talks over Jack Colback and Ayoze Perez, who both look set to finalise moves to St James' Park.

It is also understood that talks are continuing over French duo Remy Cabella and Bafetimbi Gomis.

Sunderland midfielder Colback has been in talks with a number of clubs since the end of the season, but Newcastle were always his preferred destination and they have now finalised terms with the player.

Colback is expected to undergo his medical shortly, and the 24-year-old will sign a long-term deal on Tyneside.

Like with Colback, the deal for Perez has been expected and Newcastle have also been working on that for a number of weeks.

Perez is currently with Tenerife in Spain, but he has a release clause of £1.8million which Newcastle have already agreed to meet and the 20-year-old, like Colback, is expected in the North East to complete the formalities of his move in the coming days.

Newcastle's penchant for the French market - though - will also continue and Sky Sports understands that talks with Montpellier are now at an advanced stage over Cabella - who is currently with the French squad as he is one of the stand-by players for the World Cup.

Newcastle tried to sign the 24-year-old in January, but he was committed to helping Montpellier avoid relegation before leaving, However, he was quick to confirm he would be leaving once the Ligue 1 season had finished.

Sources have told Sky Sports that Newcastle are yet to lodge an official bid, but the two clubs are closing on a deal which could be worth up to €10million.

A possible fourth deal is another familiar name to Newcastle fans, and is French striker Bafetimbi Gomis - who is available on a free transfer from Lyon.

Newcastle have long been fans of the 28-year-old - who had seemed set for a big-money move to Turkey.

However, he has seemingly decided England is where he wants to be and Newcastle are believed to be in pole-position to land Gomis - who had previously priced himself out of a move to Tyneside.

But after talks were reinitiated by Gomis' representatives, Newcastle are close to landing one of their long-term targets.

Newcastle also remain very interested in Hertha Berlin striker Pierre-Michel Lasogga, but one player they are not going to move for is Leeds' Ross McCormack.

I agree with gouff. We paid nothing for him essentially so its not a huge deal. He scored 5 or 6 goals this past season but i don't remember one of them. He never finishes when he's 1 on 1 and thats really what separates him from a big buck signing. I think there are a lot of good english players who won't develop due to the influx of foreigners. That being say i really hope we buy Danny ing's, that boy is fast.
