According to the Chronicle it's a done deal and Colback is due to be announced as our first summer signing.

"Newcastle United are understood to have won the race to sign Sunderland star Jack Colback.

It is believed that Colback is hoping to complete the switch officially on his return from holiday.

But the Geordie boy seems destined to remain in the North East after talks with Aston Villa, West Ham United and Sunderland boss Gus Poyet, who tried to persuade him to stay after his contract expired.

Colback is a boyhood Newcastle fan, but slipped through the net for United after joining Sunderland at the age of 10.

However aged 24, Newcastle look to have won his services on a free transfer while he has his best years in front of him.

Sources close to Colback say that he was eager to make the right move at this stage of his career, and it is believed to have been offered a £10m package by West Ham.

But the Chronicle understands that Colback is now poised to play for the club he supported as a kid."

That's a "meh" from me. Not a signing to get the adrenaline flowing. At least he's British and he might piss off a few mackems if he signs. Quite happy to hear us linked with McCormack and Ings though.

Decent player, doesn't pull up any trees but keeps it simple, keeps it on the deck. To be honest I was never arsed if he stayed or left and it certainly doesn't bother me if he signs for you lot and I imagine he'll be a target for the boo boys after a couple of uneventful performances. On the positive side for sunderland I think there's no more gingers left on the books

Great. We have a signed a ginger ****. He will probably take Anita's place. The quality he will no doubt add to the team next season will be jaw dropping. Alot of the fans will love it no doubt as he is local, totally dismissing the fact that he isn't very good.

No one of sound mind could convince me he will add anything to our team save maybe picking up the odd point here and there when the opposition are in pieces laughing at the wretched sight before them and allow us the odd goal out of pity. The majority of Sunderland fans are laughing and who can blame them? Go f**k yourself Pardew you grey haired, deviant chicken hawk.

70m in the bank from sky/bt, 20m from Cabaye and one of our three summer signings is jack colback for 0m.

Looking forward to the muppets telling us how its not REALLY free, and that in effect we spent 9m on him.

    Really pleased if true.

A young English player, local at that, with the best years ahead of him and he's on a free.
Win-Win Situation, and if he keeps Mr Do **** All With The Ball Anita out of the team, so much the better.

Yep I'm pretty happy about this. He's improved a lot. Everyone says they don't like him because he's **** and he's a mackem. I think he's better than Anita and one goal vs sunder land and all is forgotten..

Is he good enough for a side aiming to get into Europe? Absolutely not. Thank Christ we're not that side, he'll fit in perfectly. Colback, McCormack, Perez....I'm literally bursting with excitement. So much so I may give up on football altogether and simply watch the NFL.

He's a bang average lower/mid table midfielder who loves to pass the ball sideways/backwards. Always gives 100% and will get 3/4 goals per season doesn't stand out and rarely gets motm and as I said will be a target for the boo boys given his sunderland links and when he stuck one in your net a few months back. I'm very surprised he hasn't gone to west ham as they were apparrantly offering 50k a week, he's on a hiding to nowt signing for Newcastle IMO, both sets of fans will end up hating him

If I were being optimistic, I'd say "is he better than Gosling? Yep, welcome to NUFC". However, as things stand I tend to think "is he better than Cabaye? Nope, fck off Jack/Alan/Mike".

Well, good lift for starters. Nice to see a player clearly chosing us over other clubs. Means he really wanted to come. Looking forward to seeing a central mid of Cheikh and Jack.

I think people are being a bit picky here. It's a first team signing. Something that hasn't happened for 2 years now. He's decent, room to improve and he didn't cost us anything.

Added to which he will actually care about the shirt on his back and give 100% every time he pulls it on. As long as he is joined by the creative 'Cabaye' type midfielder we need, it's a good signing to strengthen our midfield options. If MA thinks he is the Cabaye replacement, well that is probably the worry for many.

Yep. I understand he very well could be that player with the regime we have in charge. That isn't his fault, it's Mike Ashley's. That being said i think our documented interest in cabella is a clear sign that colback isn't going to be playing in that role. I think he'll play LM personally. Similar playing style to Sissoko on the right. We did very well last season in that 4-4-1-1 (until we sold cabaye).
