In my experience both in person and on social media. It's mainly Hull with the chip on the shoulder about City. Generally Rovers fans are quite pleasant towards City. I'm really not sure why this. Sharing a ground? West Hull rivalry?
Just look at the present stalemate over any possible development at that KC Stadium and the stance of Terry ****wit Geraghty for your evidence that rugby league had been pumped up way beyond its importance for donkeys years in this city and is still holding City back. Both Hull clubs had a relatively good spell in the early 80's and that was about it. City, unfortunately, managed to have probably their worst days during that time. We lost a generation of supporters to them and probably more people switched off from local football altogether and latched onto Leeds Utd and Co. for their football fix. The local media and Hull FC have fought a constant battle ever since to win the upper hand over popularity which means sponsorship, coverage and the ability to attract support. Even morally, they continually thump the drum about rugby league being this fabulous family sport were everyone takes their grandmothers to games and all the fans march together to the match arm in arm....... Compared to footy, wendyball, soccer.......which is over hyped, full of hooligans and thugs, divers, talentless, over paid prima donnas and Hull is something special for having two professional RL clubs and therefore RL in Hull is like the rivalry between Liverpool and Everton, the game which they want to be seen as better than! With this comes the media biased towards RL. We all know that any sniff of trouble at a 'soccer' game is magnified out of all proportion and plastered all over the local rag whereas trouble at a rugby league match is quickly muffled, swept under the carpet, or if the evidence is overwhelming, blamed on Hull City fans! Can you imagine todays HDM headlines if City had played a league game in London this week end in front of just 1,000 spectators? But when its RL the attendance figures are not mentioned when they low and shouted from the roof tops if they are 'high' Like last week in the HDM....'Rovers expecting another 10,000 crowd' or the classic 'HULL DERBY HEADING FOR A SELL OUT' City fail to sell out the away end and is seen as a 'disappointing KC crowd' Even little things like the marks out of ten for atmosphere at RL games compared to football in this city. 25,000 at City, atmosphere 6/10. 8,000 at the KC for FC with a dozen away fans atmosphere 9/10. Yet we read recently that FC fans themselves now want to be out of the KC because the atmosphere is so bad. But haven't the HDM and everyone connected to the game on local radio been telling us that it is so much better then football? So who is telling porkies for all these years and why? I have no problem with Rovers as a club. They went public with their good wishes for us before the FA Cup Final. But Hull FC? No congratulatory messages before the Cup Final. I also think it is disgraceful that the club we share the KC facilities with have had their rental agreement altered twice in private with the landlords and no-one is allowed to know or see the outcome. Plus the local medias refusal to investigate and disclose the extent of the agreement which see's Hull City or the SMC subsidise every FC home game at the KC to the tune of thousands of pounds every season.
On a slightly separate theme, there was a recent banning order served on one of our 'hooligans'. His crime? He'd travelled all the way to Southend in January to see his club playing a team with no hooligan following to speak of, and run onto the pitch to embrace Matty Fryatt after the latter's goal in front of the travelling City support. Yet somehow Humberside Police and the HDM conspired to dress this up as "troublemaker ruins family day out and is rightly punished". Perhaps he should have offered his ***** porn stash as his defence and he'd have got off?
but run onto the pitch during the Hull RL derby, thump and kick someone who is laid out on the pitch, encourage other fans to come on the pitch with you, which they did, even woman and in their case attack someone with the heel of a stiletto, this all in full view of the television cameras and press with clear photographs appearing in the local rag............£60 on the spot fine. Not even required to appear at court.
City and Rovers were once one and the same. (As in they amalgamated) IIRC. Edit scratch that it was with albany football club.
And yet Corcoran and his clowns can't manage to apprehend anyone ripping up seats or setting off flares right in front of the police box. Maybe he and his band of Keystone Cops thing away fans who might resist thebpolice should be got away ASAP and forgotten about. Funny as well how arrests, bottles thrown and flares set off at the biggest derby in the universe and everywhere else never seem to end up in bans or court apoearances.
Quite agree, busdriver. Leeds at one time had 2 RL teams, who have had more success than our two. Record crowd for an RL game between the 2 local teams is 54,000 compared to 28,000 in Hull. The only thing in common being they both had to use the local football club to get the crowd, though we had space left for more in Hull than they did in Leeds. Yet no one, despite more trophies won by the rugby teams (winning more trophies is often used byneggchasers forvclaiming this is a rugby"town") has ever described Leeds as a rugby city the way deluded members of the public and nedia do in Hull.
Surely someone who makes the effort to go to Southend in January cannot seriously considered a hooligan ffs? Yet another example of Humbs Police conning the taxpayers into believing their presence is required to prevent pitched battles every week. And the HDM are complicit as they rely on the police to fill their pages daily with 'man urinated down alley' stories. Shame on both of them.
One of those occasions where you have it spot on, HT. One of the people who runs the FC forum used to have "Hull FC and Leeds United - pride of Yorkshire" as his signature.though that has disappeared now they are notbdoing well anymore. Has as the Rovers fan who was always ringing RH Talksport to go on about TWS.
I had a rather amusing confrontation with an Arsenal supporting till boy in a shop the other day. But that's for a different thread.
Perhaps your most balanced post on Rugby League since I joined the board. I have called you Mr Negative regarding your posts on RL in the past but do appreciate this one.
Caller on Humberside after the Cup Final, "I am a Leeds United fan but Hull born and bred so was pleased to see City do well". Later on another "I am a City fan and my son is an Arsenal fan so can you imagine how tense it was in our house today?". Chortling from the presenter and him saying that it must have been really tense instead of asking him why he wasn't ashamed to have raised such an obnoxious brat. No reprimand for the Leeds supporting inadequate or enquiry as to why the sad specimen didn't support his local team. The best response would have been to say proper football fans weren't interested in the thoughts of people like him.
But fair play to them they absolutely leave us standing with stuff like this http://hullfc.com/article/34545/hull-fc-launch-hull-proud-week-2014 Full on engagement with fans and community.
Exactly the sort of thing we should be doing, engaging with the community, rather than pissing them off.
Whoever is in charge of community engagement, marketing and retail at Hull FC does a fantastic job, Hull City should be looking to them for advice because our club is quite simply dire in all of those areas.
It's our 110th birthday this summer. Does the club even know? They won't plan owt anyway as its before 2010 - a period in our history that means nothing to the current owners.
