Yeah, but he probably stops earning in a couple of years. You could have tens of millions in your account and you'd struggle to retire at 35. He won't retire totally, obviously, but coaches (for example) earn a tiny fraction of what he does now. And he's probably built himself a life with quite a lot of expenses. You hear about ex-footballers going bankrupt all the time.

I will excuse Rickie, but my understanding stops there. The club is going through a tough time (real and imaginary)...don't need players feeding the media vultures. Most companies take a dim view of employees sounding off and damaging their employer's reputation. This can have an effect on income from commercial ventures.

Hopefully it's someone like Blackmore or someone who is seen as a Saints supporter so it still feels a bit like it is "in the family."

Right, can go ahead and say a little more now it's in the public domain that there will be an article online in the next 24 hours.

José Fonte goes public over uncertainty.

That's because they are utterly stupid with money and don't reign in their excesses. You can live a thoroughly comfortable life after retiring as a Championship player. So any Premiership player should have no worries at all.

oh well that one is self explanatory then.

wants a contract, no manager in yet to say whether he's wanted.

    waste of paper.

It's obvious why Fonte went to the media....he wants the fans to pronounce his name correctly when singing his song, even if it means losing the original rhythmic pattern of said song. Phew. Bet he's glad he's finally got that off of his chest.

If I was 35 with only 2-3 million in the bank me and the wife could retire and never work again....piece of piss.
And that would also include living in Spain.

I remember a few weeks after he was signed he was asked whether he wanted to be called Font, Fonte, any other sound version of his name. He said he didn't care, so Fonte is as good as anything else.

Footballers live high on the hog. They take out big mortgages and live on their income (obviously not all of them). When their income stops many go bankrupt in a few years. They also tend to get involved in business ventures when they are not always capable of being businessmen. They are also young and have to fill their days. Obviously, most of us would invest money if we suddenly earnt a million or two over a couple of years.

i expect some of them put some away but live as high as they can on the rest until the gravy train stops, then still can't stop and waste their savings.
