We still lag quite significantly behind City, Chelsea, United, Arsenal in terms of gravity pull on transfer targets.

I don't buy the opinion thrown around that any of these teams are more desperate than us, in addition to having fatter wallets, and hence doubly more likely to close out the big deals with the big shots...

Because we should be just as desperate, if not more, too!

The reasons for this are there for anybody to see: telling EPL top teams we're here to stay, continuing our progress, stamping our style further, need to reestablish European credentials, top 4 status in jeopardy, Suarez's desire to continue to play for us, etc.

Therefore, we MUST make at least one a marquee signing this summer. Question is: what constitutes a marquee signing for Liverpool at this stage? And who would you be happy for that marquee signing to be realistically?

Doesn't need to be marquee as in top player at a top club but rather just a known element. Every player is a risk but some are less risky than others. I'd rather sign 1 Draxler as a gamble than 2 Josemi's.

Established rising stars such as the young Bundesliga midfielders (Reus, Draxler, Gundogan, Xhaka) or any promising winger (Griezmann, Ljajic, Shaqiri) could be that "marquee".

Sure we can't throw money at our situation and buy Kroos or Courtois or Robben or Sneijder or even Shaw. But it doesn't mean we have to roll the dice on Iago Aspases and Luis Alberto's. They could come good but they so far have been a bust - that risk could be lowered by signing a top young talent.

Skip IA, LA, and the likes. Spend those 15m on someone better and it could be enough.

there is talent out there at a reasonable price, i mean Eriksen is probably worth a lot more than the £12 mill ish spurs paid for him, that was a gamble we missed out on.

Tello might have been another worth a gamble, but as we have Lambert by the looks of it now, that doesn't look like an option sadly.

I thought you preferred a caravan?

I don't care if we make a "marquee" signing or not, as long as we improve the squad enough to keep us in the mix.

    This Bender is popular.

I voted for him, perfect for what we need.

One main thing about signing Lallana and Lambert would be they are both British players so help with the home grown quota. Mmmmm home grown. I'm off to the loft with the rizlas.

I don't know what I would class as marquee anymore. Who was our last marquee signing - Suarez - was he widely considered marquee at the time? I like the look of Shaquiri, Bender and Rodriguez - Barkley obviously - he would fit in our system but he isn't a realistic option anyway.

Well with most things, cars, watches etc the word 'marquee' has connotations of performance, class, expense, rarity, consistent performance over time, being established at being good in whatever area the thing is from... so they would be the qualities I'd associate with that type of signing.

I think marquee really means signal of intent. One mans big signing (stoke) could be another's cast off

So per stevie g if lfc want to make a statement of intent that we are back lallana ain't it

It's like city buying robinho as a statement... Given he thought it was Chelsea said it all.... Hodgson a marquee signing was joe cole bought by mr purslow which said it all

And moyes signed Felliani, again said it all

Mourinho bought a defensive player in matic and wenger bought a 26th attacking midfielder

Lfc and statement signings in my experience doesn't work as bar say Kenny most of our best players develop in house like rush and indeed souness

That's what I think and why I asked who our last marquee signing was. It isn't something we generally do and I'd far rather have a young signing that surprises like Coutinho for example, than a big name flop.

I think our football from last season and going from 7th to 2nd is the biggest statement we could make. Not that I'd mind if we made a move for a Di Maria, Pogba or Ramsey type player <laugh>

To be fair we were trying to make one last season with Mkhitaryan, Costa or Willian but we failed to lure them.

    Suarez and Carroll.

Sturridge can't be called marquee signing imo as he wasn't doing well and was near-unwanted at his club at the time, as was Coutinho. Established talent and proficiency, price, promise, instant ability to be named on the starting 11 of any game and make an impact - make a marquee signing.

Taken as a whole, as MITO said, a marquee signing is a statement, a sign of intent and ambition. And I think we must make at least one.

I disagree with the bit in bold. We cannot become a glorious club again if we can't trust our scouts and committee with the job of a great signing of gamble-free consequence.

    Disagree.

We were able push this far on the back of Torres' money allowing signing of Suarez (marquee) and Sturridge, who would have been marquee if he wasn't pushed wide and mishandled by Chelsea. Now our ambitions have taken flight: we want to compete for the league title and aim at reaching CL semis. Can't do that just by signing Can and Caulker. Our committee has to grow balls. We aren't minows - we have some money and we have the platform.
