    He wasn't the most technically gifted but always gave a 100%, he also had that "they shall not pass" attitude.
    If they did get past, it was a case of them taking the long way round. :p
    He wasn't to shabby at getting the ball forward either.

    I was at this game ,seems like a bloody long time ago now . The reporter in the Echo wrote Irwin shot (?) from 45 yards out.

    Yes Bolton v Manchester City. Nat Lofthouse barged Bert Trautmann into the City net and the goal counted. Trautmann was a bit shaken but continued playing. It was only after the game he was diagnosed with a broken neck!! They made them tough in those days not like the modern trip over a blade of grass and roll around in agony players.
