No beefy, it's not that. He probably has been tapped up but that's probably nothing new. 12 months ago he knew that he could possibly join a top team on top wages, but he signed a new deal and wanted to retire here. I don't believe the club have told him that we are going to drop anchor and stay where we are, because even if that is what our owner wants, you just don't say that to an employee. It's one of two things: either Roy Hodgson has sad that he needs to get champions league football, or Cortese has been whispering poison about the club and some players have bought it.

    1. He is going to the World Cup, no matter where he plays next season and he is doing that as a saints player and base on his saints performances.

    2. His boyhood team was Everton.

A firesale makes it sound like the board a just laughing as they sell off players. Why it's more players don't want to be here.

Possible. But it's also possible that, while the board hasn't communicated that they aren't reaching for the stars, they're giving off as much of a vibe of ineptitude internally as they are externally.

I get that Joe, but so? NC left and the players liked him and liked his plans. A new board comes in and the owner says that we still push forward. Ok it's not quite as strong a delivery as NC but they won't have said that's it, hand brake on. He knew 12 months ago and now that as we progressed we couldn't pay the wages he'll get elsewhere, and I am beginning to think that either NC has spread some poison, or he has spread some truths that he was told by KL and has now whispered that to MP and some players.

Which, you know, might be why players keep calling the board out to show ambition.

And why Blackmore claimed a month ago that the players were just as much in the dark about the team's plans as the fans were.

My sense is the same as yours; there might be something more nefarious at work, but all signs seem to point to the players having no earthly idea where the team was going, and consequently decided that it was time to start listening to the kindly big clubs and their big bucks.

It's just wave after wave isn't it with no let up. I wonder how much is fact and how much is fiction. I cannot really see Liverpool putting in a bid at 10 pm on a Friday but certainly the media have just been watching Lallana...

I have no doubt that, since the day Cortese stepped down, he has had absolutely nothing to do with football. He has gone back to Italy, spent some time with his family and moved on. He would have nothing to gain from doing something like that and he's not a spiteful child.

I would not be at all surprised if the players saw it as the end of an era, the end of the man who had convinced them to stay this far, and decided it was time to move on. They're a tight-knit bunch as we know, and one deciding it's time to call it a day could influence others. All it takes is for a new guy to come in and say "okay I'll try and get us an offer" instead of "I want you to stay and here's why".

I don't buy that part. NC goes, they sit players down and say business as normal (that's what we were told), season carries on and then out of the blue, says before the end of the season, Lallana is wanted and MP is off. Rickie's now virtually gone, MP has gone and although I take press reports with a pinch of daly, it does look like Adam could be gone if right money is bid.... Forget the possibility of others, but I'm now asking why? I just don't get the sudden burst and I can't help but think there is wow thing we aren't being told and something that is happening behind the scenes.

But this assuredly isn't the first time that people have tried to turn their heads. It's why they're turning en masse now that is the question.

It's likely to be a combination. The board making it clear the train is slowing down and some whispers in ears too.

I'd guess that it centers around Poch. The players clearly thought very highly of him, and were outright demanding through the press that the board do everything possible to keep him in the fold. When they failed to do so -- and it's an open question whether it was possible to do so -- I'd imagine that made up some minds.

While Cortese as Rasputin has a certain flair, I just can't see him having that much influence now...and if he does have that much influence over our players, why the **** did we cast him out.
