I'm as disappointed as the next Saints fan with the news that Rickie will no longer be wearing the badge of SFC, but it would be churlish in the extreme to not wish him well for his dream move to his boyhood club. Without his goals and assists, there is no way that we would've won back to back promotions and we should be thankful that we had the best years out of him. We will be increasing our profit on him by at least 400% and he is probably, pound for pound, the best transfer signing in the club's history. Good Luck Rickie, thanks for all you've done, I'm still hoping that you will score the winning goal in the World Cup Final.
I whole heartedly agree. Who would ever thought that Liverpool would come knocking on our door to take him? And for him to receive such a offer is a once ina life time opportunity aswell as playing champions league football! I hope he gets all the success coming his way and he deserves every little bit of it! Well done Rickie, I'm so proud of you! You will be a Saint Legend in my eyes, Always.
Have to be honest, when we sung... He'll take us to the Premier League Rickie, Rickie ...for the first time, I never believed he actually would. Superb and a real hero.
Strange old story....signing for champions league Liverpool and sign on money filtering down to Rochdale ...
This might sound silly but i'm actually looking forward to his press conference/interview when he signs for Liverpool. I think he will have the words to make us all feel better about being Southampton fans after this week.
That's actually quite fitting when you remember where he has come from...rising through the leagues, peaking at Southampton, then dropping down to Liverpool.
I remember his first goal for Saints which I think was against Northampton. I thought at the time that he was a big old lump but even in that first game you could see he read the game well and had a beautiful first touch. It was hard to imagine then how his game would improve over the following months? A good friend of mine has met him on several occasions due to his work in the media and he can't speak to highly about the man, think we can see that on the pitch. An honest, genuine, grounded man that remembers where he came from. True Saints legend, genuinely hope he does well for Liverpool [apart from when they play us]. Thanks Rickie
I was at MK Dons when he scored his first hat-trick for Saints (I think), his third being that wonder goal from 40 yards out. One of a ton of fantastic memories.
Adam Blackmore on Twitter: "Had a genuinely warm moment with Rickie Lambert - he was emotional when he came to say goodbye & I wished him the best from all at Saints"
In no particular order: Rickie Lambert Matthew Le Tissier Ron Davies Steve Williams Mick Channon These guys have been my favourite Saints players in my lifetime and, even when (apart from MLT) they moved to other clubs I never stopped loving them. Rickie will always be a Southampton legend, 117 goals in 5 seasons is a fantastic record, and of course never missing a penalty for us. Only the hardest hearted person could begrudge him a move to the club that rejected him as a boy, to see out his twilight years warming the bench at Anfield and topping up his pension fund. Once we get past this initial grieving period, all Saints fans will be cheering him on in the World Cup, and next season he will get the best reception ever for any returning player at St. Mary's. God bless you, Sir Rickie Lambert.
Very sad to see him go, of course. But what an opportunity for him. I can't begrudge him for leaving, which is also why I can't get mad at the board for letting him go. He's earned the right to finish out his career this way.
My own thoughts entirely Chilco. Very sad to see the legend that is Rickie Lambert leave Saints - but glad for him. There IS only one Rickie Lambert.
It will be hard to watch a Saints team next season without Rickie in it. What a 5 years it has been. Legend is an over used word, but not for this man. Delighted for him to get a move to his boyhood club, but truly shocked and devastated that I won't be seeing him in a Saints shirt again. It won't be enough, but I thank you Rickie Lambert. I thank you so very much, and wish you all the best.
