SUNDERLAND’S Great Escape has helped propel the club up the league of football’s financial big hitters.

Brand Finance has published its annual Football 50 report, which analyses the worth of the world’s top clubs – not their value in assets and cash but the total cost payable to license the use of their logos, imagery and other brand rights.

Sunderland are ranked 31st, with the Black Cats’ brand worth an estimated $93million – up $21million from last year.

The list drives home the importance of staying in the top flight, with 10 of the top 30 most valuable brands in football being Premier League sides.

Bayern Munich is world football’s biggest brand, worth a whopping $896million, but the year’s big climbers are Real Madrid, with Saturday’s Champions League win helping to boost the Spanish side’s worth from $147million to $768million, leapfrogging over last year’s runners-up Manchester United.

The impact of the Old Trafford club’s disappointing season is underlined by the survey, which values the Red Devils brand at $730million, down $98million on last year, when they were champions of English football.

United’s profile and heritage are still enough to make the Old Trafford club English football’s most valuable brand, but upstart neighbours Manchester City are closing in, with its brand value jumping by more than half to $510million.

At the opposite end of the table, Fulham’s demotion to the Championship wiped more than a third off the brand’s value to leave them rock bottom of the top 50 brands.

Forgive my ignorance but I'm not sure I understand this list. Can somebody explain to me where these figures are plucked from?

$730m for our 'brand' is fairly nice but I'm not sure I understand how they've come to that figure, why don't they just value the clubs instead of the brand? United sold 5% on the NYSE a few months ago for £90m so for those who can't be arsed with the maths, that values us at £1.8Bn or $2.93bn. I'm fairly certain that Old Trafford, the training complex and our players and other small assets aren't worth $2.2bn.

Maybe it's our trophy cabinet, silver must be trading at an all time high.

Can't find the full table but my detective work has us placed as the 11th most valuable Premier League club - not too shabby <ok>

A product, item or service is only as valuable as the amount someone is willing to pay and always relevant to it's current situation.

If Man Utd for instance were relegated next season, that valuation would be halved immediately and if no one put a bid in, maybe half that agian. Even the players value would plummet, as the company or business Man Utd would potentially lose £10's of millions at a stroke. Granted Utd wouldn't have to sell immediately but with their massive wages and debt management, they wouldn't survive more than 1 season out of the top flight. Failure to just finish top 4 caused mass panic at Old Trafford and ultimately a top manager his job. Imagine what a relegation struggle would do? Wouldn't that be bloody funny though?

All football clubs walk this thin line of financial high rolling, although some more than others of course and it goes someway to explain the managerial madness that has befallen the championship challenging clubs but more especially the Premiership in the last 10 years.

It will only get worse going forward.

Although that scenario is about as likely as seeing Arsene Wenger break the world record for Clean & Press.

I agree though, there's only value in material with a demand. Fulham's brand may as well be zero as far as I'm concerned, if I was offered Fulham's 'brand' at $4m and told it's value is $39m I still wouldn't buy it, what would you be able to do with it? Garbage.

Terry, I remember Utd getting relegated only 2 or 3 seasons after they won the European Cup back in the early 70's. Don't ever get so blase as to dismiss it altogether, although I concede its not likely.

I merely used Utd to make a point about what being in the EPL and Champs League means to a clubs finances. We are in the top of the value list now but had things not been so remarkable for us in those final 6 games, then we may be just as easily be down with the dead men too.

Its a worryingly thin line if safety mate for EVERY club today.

It's not for EVERY club though Cest, you can argue that til you're blue in the face pal but the fact is the top clubs are getting richer every year. Look at Liverpool for example, a team who have been in and out of the Champions League since the EPL's inception, yet their turnover just keeps going up and up and up, year on year. People crowing about United desperately needing to get back in the CL or we'll end up spiralling out of control financially, it's all ridiculous, we could be out of it for 5 years and I bet you in 5 years we'll have made a bigger profit than we did in 2008 when we won it.

It would take a Leeds/Pompey style mismanagement of a club to even entertain the thought of being in 'turmoil' and these big clubs don't have idiots running their finances. The best guys in the business are in control, and as soon as an idiot starts to show in the ranks of the top clubs they're smoked out, just like those pair of nuggets that were forced to sell Liverpool.

Edit: When we were relegated in 74 it was after our best players left the club, nowadays if that happens they just get replaced with big money purchases. Apart from Scholes who can't be replaced, similar to Best/Charlton.
