I big improvement on what we had. Gomez from what I have seen will hold the ball, find the space for a pass and can score. I think in Gus' system he will be used as AM, coming into the box late for the loose ball. That's something we haven't had for a long time. Very happy with 2 cheap signings. As said above I reckon the big moves will come later, probably after the World Cup.
we've signed 2 players who can pass a ball which is how poyet likes to play i expect a few more of these type of deals and i'm happy with it
Being a bit naive I thought that would be a prime requisite for a football player. Those who signed players like Gardner & Bardsley obviously know more than me Just imagine watching Sunderland playing a passing game with players wanting the ball and moving off the ball ........ Fantasy Football
Can't say I've ever been blown way by jordi, a lot rate him but he's always seemed ordinary to me personally, how old is he? I trust poyet, and the lad will have my backing when he plays, hopefully I'll be eating humble pie.
How can you say this - Bardsley played the best through ball of the season just gone so he can pass a ball... You'll remember his awesome through ball - it was against Hull at the Stadium of Light....
Jordi "bloody" Gomez, as he's known around our house. I'll be really interested to see what you lads make of him next season. No Wigan player ever has caused such extremes of love and hate. Booed incessantly for two and half seasons in the PL, it's my opinion that he should never have got an extension on his contract with us in 2011. But if he hadn't got an extension, he wouldn't have been with us to score this and to put the icing on the cake of what turned out to be a perfect day out at Goodison - I'll summarise my feelings like this - Bobby Martinez tried to build a team around this guy for 4 seasons in the Prem. If he thought he was good enough, he would have taken him to Everton, like he did everyone else.
No he wasn't, I'd say you're talking rubbish. Martinez didn't take everyone to Everton either, plus they're already overloaded with good midfield players.
I have to say, I haven't exactly got a bonk on over this but we'll give the lad a chance to see what he can do.
No offence mate but there's your problem right there. He's nowhere near good enough to have a team built around him. He'll be a decent option here.
What, booed you mean? Lol, because I haven't missed a home game he's played in so I wouldn't be in a position to know. You've no idea, seriously. Look at this - http://www.chrisgriffinsays.co.uk/5-4-friday-5-booing-nos/ Or take a look at the comments under the story on the club's facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/wiganathletic He has completely divided opinion. Some people barracked him for years. Some people seem to have huge sympathy for him, and convince themselves he's the "most technically gifted player" we've ever had. Maybe he'll do you a good turn - which is why I said I'm looking forward to seeing what your opinion is of him. For me, some wonderful memories, but too few and interspersed with too many really awful performances.
None taken. You know when a manager gets a blind spot over a player? That's what happened with Bobby and Jordi. Bobby was completely stubborn, he was going to make Gomez central to his system, and Gomez just wasn't good enough. It couldn't have been clearer than when at the end of 2011/12, we were certs to go down, one nil down away to Norwich when Bobby took off Gomez and brought on Maloney, we got a draw in that game and won seven out of our last nine to stay up - and Gomez only played in one of those nine. But just to confuse things, the one game he played in he scored one and made the other as we beat Arsenal at the Emirates. An enigma.
I've been to 2 Premier League matches at Wigan, as well as seeing them twice at Sunderland ..... ...... he wasn't booed by anyone not even when he was sent off for fouling Danny Rose. To say that he's been 'Booed incessantly for two and half seasons' is rubbish. If you'd said booed, now & again, by a handful of bellends I'd say it wasn't rubbish. He was Wigan's player of the season, by a mile, so I'll take your comments with a inch of salt. Claiming you know better than Martinez, probably the best manager you'll ever have, adds another pinch.
Well there's no way he'll walk into our team, when he gets his chance he's going to need to be at his best to keep his place. He'll feature regularly no doubt but he'll get no chance for complacency. He can play proper football though so should complement the squad nicely.
He was the best player at Wigan, he might not be the best player on our bench next season ... very pleased we have him though.
Quality player and certainly more mobile and better control than Gardner. 2 signings. No cist. Both good additions. Thus Poyet / Congleton partnership already looks a better bet than PDC / do Fanti.
Why would you challenge what I'm saying when I was at many of the games he played for us over the years? He was booed incessantly by a sizeable minority for more than two seasons - more like three if we include the huge barracking he got at home when subbed against Maribor. And he wasn't our player of the season by a mile. Both Boyce and McArthur were FAR superior. Every Wigan supporter will admit Jordi got it because yes, he improved under Rosler - but he got a big sympathy vote for all the treatment he'd had in the previous seasons - which you'd like to deny took place. Have you got shares in him or something? You seem awful defensive about whether or not he's a good addition. "The best player at Wigan"? Had Maloney been fit at all last season you wouldn't even be able to say he's our best midfielder.
Why not? As I've just said I've seen him play home & away and he wasn't booed .... therefore it's not incessant is it? You forgot to mention that it was a minority of Wigan fans who booed, " the numpty boo boys" as it says on the Facebook page you posted. And just how do you know how & why thousands of Wigan supporters voted, are you their elected spokesman? To be fair, that's the impression you're giving. Why would anyone vote for their player of the year based on sympathy, I've never heard anything like it.
I've always quite liked the look of the lad, looks comfortable on the ball, decent on set pieces. I do take on board what the Wigan lad is saying, but without question this lad has been brought in to help fill out the squad, and on that basis is an excellent addition. Better than Gardner, so again, as with Billy Jones, a step in the right direction, however small. I'm delighted to be filling squad slots with PL experienced footballers, as simple as that.
