I'm not going to spend time trawling through posts but your casual 'spic' comment comes to mind, as does your hilarious backtracking when you realised your error.
This whole 'Suarez hasn't scored against the big sides' thing... Is that using the positions of the sides in the table when they played each other, or their final standing at the end of the season? Regardless it's a bit ridiculous... he contributes a lot more than goals and was instrumental in our defeats of Arsenal, City etc. If we cast our minds back a little further he's scored against Arsenal, Chelsea and United in previous seasons anyway hasn't he?
I'm obviously biased but Shearer is the best striker in Premier League history IMO. Henry, Van Nistelrooy, Cole (pretty much everyone on that list) etc all played for the best teams in the league meaning they all had half a dozen chances created for them each game. Shearer only had this luxury for about 3-4 years of his career. If Shearer had signed for Man Utd instead of us he'd probably have 306 league goals rather than 206. Once his pace went he also completely re-invented his game but still remained just as prolific. Henry, Van Nistelrooy, Anelka and maybe Le Tissier would make up the remaining four for me.
Even the Blackburn team he won the title with weren't the best team in the league, they only really won it because they had him in the team, but the rest of them without him wouldn't have stood a prayer. Newcastle had a good spell under Robson when you where near the top, but again that was largely down to having an in his prime Shearer up front. Once age started to catch up with Shearer, the whole team started to decline as without him they where just your run of the mill mid table side. I agree that had Shearer come to us, he'd of easily scored a lot more, he'd of had a field day with the likes of Giggs, Beckham and Scholes supplying him, and it may well have been close to 300
Shearer was class but rarely had the opportunity of testing himself at the very highest level for his club/s. Therefore it's harder to say where he would have been as good at that level. Drogba for instance dominated in the C.L for years and therefore scored goals consistently at a higher level than Shearer for instance. It's not Shearer's fault as such but he's never had the same inpact Drogba did during that 2012 C.L run. I think Shearer would have done well at that level to but we'll never know for sure. He was obviously good at international level. He also took a lot of pens to help those goal records.
But Europe has nothing to do with the OP so we can only base any argument/point on what was achieved in the Premier League. Shearer scored 45 pens in the league I believe, but Van Nistelrooy, Henry, Fowler etc all used to take penalties too. I just don't think anyone in that list would have been capable of scoring the number of goals Shearer did playing for a 6th-10th place team. Where as it stands to reason that Shearer would have scored a lot more goals playing for a team constantly in the top four.
Sorry not having that. Henry and RVN are a level above any other striker that has played in the Prem. Plenty of strikers at lower clubs have failed to make impact when moving to a bigger club.
Shearer captained his country, was top scorer at Euro 96 and his record for England was a goal every two games. It's not like he's unproven on the big stage. Not one player at a lower club has proven anywhere near capable of scoring the number of goals Shearer got season after season. Also, to counter your statement further, under Keegan and then Robson we were amongst the best four teams in the country, in those seasons he got 20 plus league goals in each of them. So he's performed well at a bigger club (us, as were were a big club for 2-3 year spell in the 90's and again for a three year spell from 2001 - 2003). Of course we're still a big club fan base wise, just very mediocre in every other aspect
Shearer superb til 97, then dropped a level to very good. 92-97 Shearer up there with Henry as best Prem striker.
I'm not saying he wasn't proven on the big stage, I'm countering the point people have made about him scoring ****loads at 'smaller' clubs as oppose to moving to a United or an Arsenal. Just don't see how anyone can think he was better than Thierry Henry, and I'm not taking anything away from Shearer as he was phenomenal but Henry and RVN were just another level
I agree that 92-97 Shearer was better than Shearer from 97 onwards, definitely, the season he won the league with Blackburn and his first season with us he was probably one of the best 3 strikers in the wolrd. From 97 onwards he was very effective, changed his game completely as he had no pace but still continued to get 20 plus goals a season. Robson was very clever as he bought Bellamy, Dyer etc and just packed the team out with pace so they could all do Shearer's running for him. I just think to have two cruciate knee ligament injuries, which resulted in him missing two full season and still get 206 league goals is almost untouchable. As stated, of course I am biased as he's a club legend but he has the goals (more goals than any other player) to back up his legendary status.
Drogba was half the player Shearer was, there really is no comparison. Drogba's league goal tallys where 10, 12, 20, 8, 5, 29, 11 and 5. So in 8 years he had 1 outstanding season, and 1 decent one. Playing in a much stronger side than Shearer ever did. Shearer in comparison had goal tallys of 31, 34, 31 all in consecutive seasons. So 30+ goals 3 years in a row. He also had other good seasons of 25, 23, 23 and 22. So please stop trying to compare the 2, as Shearer wasn't just better than Drogba, he was on a different planet to him. As for the Champions League stuff, Drogba hardly took the tournament by storm, he never once won a golden boot in that tournament, despite playing as a lone striker for a side that regularly got to the latter stages. Yes he scored some important goals, but so did Peter Crouch. Shearer proved at International level that he could cut it with the best winning the Euro 96 golden boot, so you can't beat him with that stick because of his loyalty to Newcastle. Shearer still has 2 Uefa Cup golden boots too, which is still better than Drogba who's never won any type of golden boot in Europe. Only delusional Chelsea fans think Drogba was one of the best, where as us neutrals know he had 1 outstanding, and 1 decent season, and 6 poor ones in his 8 seasons in the PL
Neither where you guys of Drogba, hence 30 million for Shevchenko and 50 for Torres. You wouldn't have bought those players if you'd had a decent striker like Shearer up front
How on earth can you leave out Super Kevin Philips ? The last Englishman to win the golden boot and score 30 goals in 1 season.
This for me. Note my name, work out who I support. Obviously i drool over Shearer and his 260 prem goals. But as a complete, special, technically gifted footballer, for me Henry gets it. His goal to game ratio is better than Shearers I think aswell. Shearer may be the best ever striker to hardly win fook all! Andy Cole does not get many mentions but he scored **** loads when he hit the scene.
