How else can he resign? He's under contract. If he is unwilling to carry out the rest of his contract we don't have to pay him the rest of the contract. Does this really need explaining?
Would people have actually been happier if, during the season, Poch had announced that he had little intention of seeing out the final year of his contract? Repeating, from the time that Cortese departed, that he'd remain until the summer and the decision would be made then never seemed like he was particularly convinced about staying here.
Cock, twat, judas, jerk tit, banker, are all words to describe Pochettino. Now can the Mods close every Pochettino thread and leave this forum for those its intended to be for - those of us who were saints, are saints and will be saints til we die, not just until a better offer comes along.
My point still stands - the club has come out of this looking weak. Why not come out fighting with an emphatic statement? "Contrary to our strong efforts to keep him, our manager Mauricio Pochettino has taken the decision to settle the remainder of his contract with us and taken the decision to resign. Whilst we begin our search for his long-term replacement, the club would like to re-assure fans and playing staff alike that we will continue to progress forward. In the mean time, we would like to re-iterate our stance that no first team players are for sale." Bosh. That took two seconds with no thought on my iphone.
I feel a little for Reed though. He was between a rock and a hard place. We wanted to keep him and tried to convince him, but in the end he was off..... I don't think Reed could really have said much.
Pochettino was probably telling Les Reed the same things he was saying in the press conferenes, I.E..."I don't need to sign anything as my contract is good for another year"
That sounds remarkably like the statement the club actually made. The only difference being the last line, which I guess for many would be key.
Can someone ask newsnow to remove the word "Pochettino" from their search for Southampton news? Really don't want to trawl through hundreds of Spurs posts to find one about Saints!
Anyone reckon the reason he's left is because the board possibly didn't want to have to trust someone so loyal to Cortese going forward? Certainly seems we've had warning about this coming to a head, and have been speaking to people already. If we manage to get in a manager of the calibre of Koeman, Yakin, or Benitez then it's possible the vast majority of players will stay and we may have a manager even better than the one that just left. Honestly think he'll flop at Spurs, out of his depth trying to get them top 4 by playing the same tactics against every team he plays. Too naive for a team realistically hunting top 4 imho. Roll on the good times We may yet finish above him next year.....
He was a really good manager, made us have a hard working team and a team who won the midfield battle and kept possession, but he never really had a plan b. This could be more down to the lack of options than the tactics though. He'll suit Spurs as neither us or Spurs are hugely prolific, but both have strong CMs and solid defences, with flair players out wide.
Poch didn't seem to have much luck attracting ex-players of his to Saints. The one he managed to get was hounded out of his old club anyway, and certainly didn't ever feel like playing for Poch at any point.
How on earth is Steve McClaren proven? A proven clown, yes. A man with a black cloud of depression over him wherever he goes. Imagine trying to get motivated by him! I keep hearing this concept from some Saints fans on here; we all know Dutch league football doesn't count, and other than a bit of a run with Boro, he's been a flop everywhere else (including his second Dutch run) and is a proven laughing stock, from his brolly antics to his Dutch accent.
fair point. i thought most of our defensive collapses came when the defence was compromised but that was our first choice lineup. ward-prowse and Cork in midfield was a bit lightweight though and wasn't Boruc carrying an injury?
Fair enough Beefy. I still stand by this bit though.... "If we manage to get in a manager of the calibre of Koeman, Yakin, or Benitez then it's possible the vast majority of players will stay and we may have a manager even better than the one that just left. Honestly think he'll flop at Spurs, out of his depth trying to get them top 4 by playing the same tactics against every team he plays. Too naive for a team realistically hunting top 4 imho. Think we may still have landed on our feet here even if it does turn out to be inadvertently.
Yep, all true, but was referring as much to their defence as ours. All goals were defensive horror shows, and Spurs continued in that vein in their games after that.
