COSTEL PANTILIMON has emerged as one of Gustavo Poyet’s preferred candidates to fill the goalkeeping hole in the Sunderland squad this summer.

Poyet is looking at options to compete with Vito Mannone and the promising Jordan Pickford between the posts next season and Crystal Palace’s Julian Speroni and Pantilimon are two of his likeliest signings.

Both are to become free agents at Palace and Manchester City respectively on July 1 and Sunderland hope to have one of those tied down in advance.

Argentine Speroni, 35, would appear to be in pole position at this stage because of his strong friendship with Poyet.

The pair have known each other for a number of years having struck up a bond when Poyet lived in London, where he played for Tottenham and Chelsea, and Speroni moved to the capital in 2004.

It was something of a surprise when he was not on the retained list revealed by Tony Pulis last week, with the Palace boss looking to bring in a new keeper for his first full season in charge at Selhurst Park.

Speroni, who has been the Eagles’ No 1 for a number of years, would not be entirely satisfied with starting the campaign as understudy to Mannone, but he might be happier than Pantilimon to start there.

City’s second choice shot-stopper has not been offered new terms at this stage, while Richard Wright has because he fulfils homegrown criteria to sit on the bench.

And Pantilimon, 27, is keen to become a number one somewhere after spending the last few years as understudy to England’s Joe Hart at the Etihad Stadium.

The Romanian played when Manchester City defeated Sunderland at Wembley in the Capital One Cup in March. He made just seven Premier League appearances for the champions.

Pantilimon has not been offered a new deal by Blues boss Manuel Pellegrini, along with Joleon Lescott and Gareth Barry. There was talk of him leaving in January but nothing materialised.

Poyet - who needs a new keeper after Oscar Ustari's decision to leave after six months - is pursuing players in a variety of roles and he wants progress.

Sporting director Lee Congerton’s links to Hamburg have raised the possibly of defender Michael Mancienne arriving.

The former Chelsea youngster’s form in the Bundesliga has gone up and down but Congerton, who took him away from Stamford Bridge, is believed to be interested in a deal.

Sunderland will have a significant difference in look to their squad next season, with Poyet keen to make improvements to a pool of players he inherited from Paolo Di Canio last October.

Di Canio, working alongside former director of football Roberto De Fanti, brought in a 14 new players last summer and many failed to impress. A number of them have already been moved on.

Not really a rumour lads but would anyone fancy Van Ginkel from Chelsea on loan?

Think he could be a young talent that could seriously add options to the team!

van Ginkel looks a very talented lad, and they are supposedly looking to put him on loan to an English club next season.

Problem I have is I'm pig sick of getting good lads on loan, helping them grow, and then us seeing them piss off.

I completely agree with Gustavo, we put millions on the recent loanees. Only would do this if we had an option to buy.

Montpellier have already stated they want £8million for Cabella, who is expected to go to Chelsea, after being long linked with the horse botherers.

Lacazette is a piss poor finisher, but a very good player, he will likely be available, but wouldn't really be a great signing at this stage, also linked to the Toon, for me, they can have him, we won't be in for him IMO.

Clement Grenier, well, he's a very, very good player indeed, rumours are that he's about to sign for the Toon for around £11million, so we'd have a chance.

it's been quiet at Sunderland where incoming transfers have been concerned, with most of the focus on players leaving the club. However we finally have some small movement in the transfer market, as Sunderland have invited Mexican striker Kevin Chaurand to Sunderland on trial.

The 19-year-old striker, who plays for Club Celaya in Ascenso MC (the second tier of Mexican football), will join Sunderland for pre-season training in July as the young striker looks to earn a permanent move to the Stadium of Light;

We've talked with Alejandro (Marquez) [Chairman of Club Celaya] and it's good are realizing that I'm working well and keep humble with your head up and hope that I can earn a place there.

He told me that I got just right now got a letter of invitation to go to them a for a few days to do pre-season, from 8 July to look forward and see what happens, I am ready to go.
It's not clear yet whether the trial will take place at the Academy of Light or in America, which may suggest the club may have an American trip lined up for either the first team or development squad;

It's not known whether it would be in the U.S. or England, would be to see in the coming weeks and do well.
After learning of Sunderland's interest, Chaurand was quick to start following Sunderland, with the striker liking what he saw from the team as the season came to an end and he's determined to make the most of his chance to join a Premier League club;

Alejandro had already spoken to me two or three months ago and I started to slowly follow them, they are a good team, I like the project and look forward and see how things go,

Always motivates and thinking at that time and train from right now to get that opportunity.
Presumably should Sunderland sign the striker permanently, Chaurand will initially appear for Kevin Ball's development squad, in a similar vein to Duncan Watmore, El-Hadji Ba and David Moberg Karlsson.
