Yep. Exactly this. While I hate the way Arsenal ruins a lot of young players with their stockpiling approach, from their perspective it's been a fairly good strategy.

Part of the problem is that I don't think that too many teams even think of Saints as a mid-level club. They think of us as a small club that just happened to get lucky and will suffer from a mass exodus and a quick fade back to obscurity. It's like a bubble stock-- we went too far, too fast. Everyone thinks we're just Cortese. Or MP. Or a few lucky academy products.

If we can hang on to a couple of players, and finish a couple seasons mid-table then people will think that the infrastructure is solid, and while we may be a mid-level team it's conceivable we could take up step up, or at least the risk is low if we don't. And then we'll attract better players and/or managers and we can slowly work our way up.

Well yes, but I don't actually think Ozil contributed a whole lot to their success early on. That was Arsenal spending big to appease fans. I don't think they had to do it actually.

Did I say that? What I'm saying is they could have spent nothing and had just as good a season. I'm sure you know that, you're not an idiot.

Echo saying an announcement is imminent. Wonder if he's signed a new deal here.

so they've done good business except for when they wasted the money?

edit: not reliable but soccerbase makes the season before a 7m net spend.

    it was necessary tbh.

His approach has been fantastic apart from that uncharacteristic bad business. And I think we can agree the Ozil signing was very uncharacteristic.

I'm guessing the announcement will be that we have signed Lallana and Shaw to new deals. The announcement for MP's extension will come later this week, after the Lukaku signing and announcement.

the uncharacteristic business has gone on for a couple of seasons tbh. He spent big this season and last.

arteta, podolski and mertesacker were partially a panic to cover for the failure in his typical transfer policy. Ozil was a labour of love IMO, rather than fan pandering. you may argue that it was merely a rash decision though and i'd accept that i cannot prove otherwise.
