RVP and Suarez have done something that Drogba couldn't do, put together back to back prolific seasons. They've both also won the PFA award, an award Drogba never achieved
Fair enough I get your point, but he wasn't always played as a 2nd striker, he could play up there too. He was used as a main striker more than Rooney has been
So a player that couldn't get in the team is better than one of the most feared forwards in Europe in the last decade. Good logic!! Henry, RVN, Shearer and Drogba are comfortably the best 4. The rest are debateable. Andy Cole whilst having a good goal record was ****e. He always needed about 10 chances to score hence why he never got a run for England even in his prime. Yorke was good but no better than say Jimmy Floyd, Ian Wright etc. Good solid forward but not world class.
And Drogba has done loads they haven't. Such as dominate in the C.L. How many champions league games has Suarez played? Drogba should have won all player of the year awards in 2010. The fact Rooney did was an absolute farce. Drogba won the league and out scored him having taken only 1 pen as well.
I'd have had Hasselbaink on that list, Fowler too. Top 5 i'd go for Henry Fowler Hasselbaink Drogba Van Nistelrooy/Shearer
Agreed. The top players can only be compared when comparing what they achieved at the very highest level. Fowler banging in goals v average P.L teams is bread and butter for a p.l striker and there are dozens of forwards down the line who have done this well (Kevin Phillips springs immediately to mind, Chris Sutton pre us, Ian Wright etc). The absolute top level players would have had to have done it in cup finals, c.l games, international level etc. Drogbas record in this regard in matched by very few. Fowler couldn't even get in the England team. I'd admit Drogba perhaps wasn't as consistent as some of these others being mentioned but if you were heading into a tight C.L game or a cup final, who would you want up front, Drogba or Fowler/Cole etc. Not even close.
There is a difference between not rating a player and thinking a players overrated. Both where top players, I just don't rate them amongst the best that have played in the PL. Both of them IMO where inconsistent, though granted both did score some amazing goals. Bergkamps goal v Newcastle when he flicked it round the defender was very special, I've never seen anyone score a goal like that before
What about Zola's v Norwich (the flick from the corner). One of the best FA cup goals ever. Whenever anyone talks about the best premier league players ever, Zola and Bergkamp would always be mentioned. Do you find it strange that your opinion differs from 99% of other football fans, pundits, pros etc???? Players like them are always likely to be a bit more inconsistent because they are players that try the spectacular, take risks etc. Less likely to come off than players who play it safe. Both were an absolute joy to watch and wish we had more of them still in the league.
Neither were inconsistent . You just don't like them because the stat book disagrees with your "goal every two games" theory.
Wasn't Zola once voted the best foreign player ever ?? Or was that just the best Chelsea foreign player?? Either way he was a model of consistency, a fabulous creative, scoring player and the equal of any put up here for voting on. And he did all this at the end of his career, not at the prime. An absolute cast iron walk up for top 5.
He only went to Chelsea because Ancelotti didn't rate him and wanted him out, and none of the big clubs across Europe where interested. Don't forget back then Chelsea where decent, but not one of the top sides. Zola was a good player, but he certainly wasn't a great player. The Italians knew this too, with only 35 caps for Italy, and he let his country down in both the major tournaments he went to. Hence why he was never selected for another one
If banging in goals against average PL sides is the bread and butter for a striker, why is Drogba the greats record against them so bad? Top striker for 2 seasons but the rest he's been poor. Suarez has had just as many good seasons in the league as him. Also if your saying who is the best PL striker, comparing Europe and cup finals isn't irrelevant as obviously neither are league. Henry Shearer Rvn Fowler In that order for me.
