Reports are coming in that Raul Meireless is going to be sold to Internazionale to make way for Stewart Dowing and other players on their way to Liverpool including Charlie Adam. LIVERPOOL: Stewart Downing has moved a step closer to joining Liverpool after being told he can leave Aston Villa as long as the Anfield club meet a £19m asking price (Daily Mail). Gael Clichy will dig his heels in to try to force a move to Liverpool; Roma have offered £7million for the French defender - £2m more than the Reds, but Clichy wants to move to Anfield (The Sun). To help finance new deals Liverpool could let Raul Meireles leave for Internazionale. (Daily Mirror)
I think Mereiles is a good player but if it's for the good of the team then fine. Great if he stays if he goes I will wish him well.
Hope he stays, but I do agree he isn't consistent. I don't think we will be selling to buy though. And another point, if we sold Meireles, we'd get around £15m, how could that be used to buy Downing (£19m) and Clichy (£5m) which totals £24m? OP: Tip for the future. Don't quote The Scum on Liverpool boards. I'm sure you realise the history and many users are still offended by the actions that took place.
Meireles needs to stay. He was our best midfielder last season, and was key to our second-half-of-the-season success. Particularly annoying that he'd be used to bring in Downing who I don't rate anyway. Mata+Clichy would be understandable, though... Urgh, this.
Urgh, this.[/QUOTE] Not sure what you meant by this - but for those in doubt (or are too young to remember) read this and make your own judgment on the S*n - if you are a footbal fan you shouldn't buy, read or quote the S*n. http://dontbuythesun.co.uk/site/
Meireles is a bit of an enigma- a bit inconsistent as has been mentioned- but with the season we've had it's not surprising. Although he looks hard he tackles like a girl ( no offence, ladies ). On the other hand, he looks good going in behind the strikers and gives us more attacking options. I'd rather he stayed- I too am unconvinced about Adam and Downing- but I trust the management to do what they think is best.
I think the quote from that dishrag was an oversight, it's as well we remind ourselves now and again though.
==================================================================================================================== And another point, if we sold Meireles, we'd get around £15m, how could that be used to buy Downing (£19m) and Clichy (£5m) which totals £24m? ....It does not need a Rocket Scientist to know that when you sell and the money is not enough you need to add your own money to meet the shortfall. ...The quote is not directly from the sun but the Eurosports. You go to Eurosport you are going to find it there.Moaning Minnie
Of course, but how would he really be 'making way' when there are two players to be brought in? I mean, one player with a higher evaluation may be understandable, but how can two players fill one gap? -- Eurosport quoted the Ccum, you quoted Eurosport..
Best time to sell him. He's had to play out of position and with wingers we won't need him so much. We'll make a small profit on him. The question is not how good has he been but how well does he slot into Kenny's New Plan? Ditto Downing, for which I read a fee of £18m, with us currently offering £15m. Rafa didn't get the players he wanted. It'd be nice for Kenny to get the players he wants, even if they're not sanctioned by some fans who are more informed on players than the current manager.
I almost forgot, on the subject of tackling. Anyone remember King Kenny's first game in charge? Against United? When Meireles pulled out of a tackle, which somewhat angered Gerrard, who then went in two footed into Michael Carrick? The lack of commitment and passion from Meireles highlighted exactly why King Kenny want a british core with passion and drive. Something to think about..
If he goes, does that mean Aquilani stays put. They do exactly the same job.Neither of them can tackle, but are both CAM's.
Personally I feel the same way as Mereiles has more about him,he's far stronger. He can look after himself. If it were me,I would sell Aquilani and keep Mereiles.
Ashame that, I always looked forward to seeing Aquilani get a chance center stage. He is a good player but no one can deny he was mistreated by Hodgson. Who'd loan out Aquilani when his just recorvered fully from injury, ready to fight for a place in the team. (Not to mention paying £20m the year before for him)
Also Aquilani seems to want out, and as we've said so many times- we only want players who want to be here.
I agree that the Sun is not a friend of Liverpool Football Club. Kenny Dalglish is the manager and he knows where to balance the team ...and also want to have a very strong bench.Sometime we are strugglig when teams come to Anfied and park the bus or we are away and need to defend a lead or losing; we need the whole points .How many times United scored late equaliser or winner last season.? We need a strong team, no one will exaxtly know why they want to sell Meireless.
