Where is actually the ****test place to live in the North East? I was thinking about this the other day.

My ex's mother worked as a carer, and had to carry a whistle, among other things, in case of attack around Byker and Walker like (she has thankfully never had to use it)... But if we talked about London in comparison, for example, where vast landscapes are dodgy, we must have it pretty good.

Can only call it as I see it, but haven't come across anywhere here where you find trouble if you're not looking for it. I know isolated incidents happen everywhere, but overall most places on Tynesie seem to be fairly safe compared to some inner city areas elsewhere in the country. I haven't spent any decent amount of time on Wearside so can't speak for there, but I doubt it can be that much different. Depends how you define the North-east, but Redcar seems to get a lot of bad press - but never been there.

The worst place I've lived is Oxford. It might be known for a posh uni, but go into Cowley or Blackbird Leys and it is rough as ****. Used to be the nightshift manager at the Tesco there and we had pitched battles in the back yard almost every night with people breaking in to steal stock. There were certain areas where you could easily find trouble whether or not you were looking for it.

Hendon is an absolute ****hole. Pennywell too. Grovehill in Middlesbrough is dog rough as is Grangetown. Elswick has some pretty ropey areas. Darlo is pretty bad. The centre is alright but get out to the likes of Haughton/Whinfield/Springfield/Harrogate Hill....chav central and wannabe gangsters. Durham and Chester le Street likewise. Northumberland too.

My work involves a fair bit to do with social housing, you tend to see some of the depths. All in all I have to say I have found Grangetown and Grovehill the worst.

Plenty would be in the running for the most backward hillbilly country. As a Northumberland lad, when you get away from the main towns and head out into the country or up the coast, it really is League of Gentleman "you're not local" country. I find it very similar in large parts of Durham and Chester le Street. They just look at you like you have been trying to **** their mama, when that's their job <laugh>.
