I blame the major parties for failing to deal with people's natural concerns. It is too easy to write people off as racists when you live in a comfortable suburb and the voters live in the real world where no one is listening to them. I was brought up in the sixties and, as a typical child of the sixties, was anti-prejudice. The British people welcomed the Asians being evicted from their homes in Africa. However, immigrants in those days wanted to fit in, they didn't want to change Britain...they were glad to be here. Now there are whole areas where the British feel isolated in a society that wants to cancel hundreds of years of fighting for freedom and return to medievalism. Labelling people and not listening to them has driven the reasonable into the arms of the unreasonable.

To where...most countries are more racist than we are. in fact, contrary to what people think, the British are the most easy going people around. UKIP is taking advantage of years of intellectuals in ivory towers not listening or even seeing what is happening. I look at the people in UKIP and know I don't want to be associated with them...but I'm not trying to raise kids on a down at heel housing estate with my kids going to school where English is not the first language. I am concerned that UKIP and the BNP are gaining ground...this isn't the country that I know. Sadly, look round the world...countries more tolerant than ours are very thin on the ground. You can write off all of Africa for a start.

My ward was an easy Tory win as usual.

    St Albans council seats:

    Conservative - 29
    Lib Dem - 17
    Labour - 10
    Green - 1
    Independent - 1

Can't blame us for this UKIP ****!

One thing I do give credit to UKIP, and Nigel Farage in particular for, is coming across as normal people. I disagree with everything they say, but they speak to you and on the TV like you would to anybody else rather than coming out with the whole "the important issue is 2.5% growth in GDP....the budget deficit is one of the biggest in Europe....we are working in the national interest, and two parties have come together...". It is very tedious, and I can understand why people really aren't interested in Politics - because they see Politicians as a class unrepresentative of society.
Farage tries to listen to people, and again despite what I think about his party's policies, comes across as a charismatic, likeable guy. The other parties do need to take note about this, especially the Labour party, who I continue to be disillusioned from.

Farage is a complete twat. Not quite as much of a twat as Milliband though.

You can't say Miliband is a twat while he still remains, to the public at least, completely devoid of personality. I'll probably vote for him, even though I'm far from pleased about it.

Ah, think I got the wrong Miliband. I was thinking of David Miliband. Whoops, my error. Still can't stand Labour though.

Yeahhhh. The Greens are tempting but I don't know. People like LTL on here have put me off the idea a bit.

Hancock loses council seat to UKIP
Portsmouth South MP Mike Hancock, who is accused of sexual misconduct towards a female constituent, loses his seat on the city council to UKIP.

    I feel so conflicted.
