Because Liverpool have not been in the champion league since 2009, they have low ranking. As a result, likely to face tough clubs in the group stage. Liverpool face a tough return to the Champions League after being placed in pot three ahead of the group stage draw in August following the end of the domestic leagues across Europe. The Reds finished second in the Premier League and will play in Europe's premier club competition for the first time since 2009 next term, however it could be a return which could be short lived. Brendan Rodgers' have been placed in pot three ahead of the drawn in Nyon in August, ensuring they avoid the likes of Greek champions Olympiakos, Dutch champions Ajax and Rafael Benitez's side Napoli – should the Italian side make it through third-round qualifying. However, the good news ends there for Liverpool who will definitely be paired with one of Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid, the 2014 finalists, four-time winners Barcelona, holders Bayern Munich and Portuguese giants Benfica who all lie in pot one. FC Porto will join that list if they qualify. In Pot 2, among the teams Liverpool could face include Serie A champions Juventus, big-spending Ligue 1 winners Paris Saint-Germain and 2012 runners-up Borussia Dortmund. Schalke, Shakhtar Donetsk and FC Basel represent the other possible opponents. Those teams in the first three pots will be hopeful of avoiding the likes of Atletic Bilbao, AS Roma or AS Monaco who all lie in wait in pot four alongside minnows FC Copenhagen, Anderlecht and Salzburg among others. It would be something of a baptism of fire for Liverpool, who responded from finishing outside the European places in the 2012/13 campaign to contest for the Premier League title last season. Rodgers has already begun working on expanding his squad in the summer transfer window ahead of the demands presented by balancing domestic and European commitments and says a high calibre of players are required ahead of the new campaign. "We're after players that are hungry, that have ambition to become better players," he said. "We need technical players that can play in a fast game and we need technical intelligence." Arsenal - if they negotiate the third-qualifying round - and Chelsea, will be in pot one, with Premier League champions Manchester City in pot two. https://uk.news.yahoo.com/liverpool-learn-champions-league-draw-fate-142213856.html#ZQ9uoPo
Impossible I know, but I'd love us to be in a group with Barcelona, Bayern and PSG. Its what football is all about #bringit
doesn't bother me as to be the best you have to play against the best. ie we probably learnt more playing against real and beating them than we did when we won 8-0 against besiktas. bring it on
Does it really matter who we get in the group stage? Brendan's first European campaign as well as quite a few of the players. I don't expect much from this term in the CL, would be great to pass the group stage.
yeah I didn't want us back in the CL for the "glory" of 0-0 against Real Sociedad and 1-0 against Shakhtar Donetsk
Teams will be hoping to avoid us in the pot 3 tier, look at it like that - bring on those massive nights at Anfield against the biggest teams I say
Whoever we draw the primary objective in the CL must be to qualify from the group. Our absence from the competition will make that qualifying harder than it may otherwise have been. The upside of playing against stronger teams is that we finally get to test our strength on more than a domestic basis. If we achieve our objective then we can look forward to the knock-out stage in the knowledge that we have already proved ourselves. If we don't succeed then we will have learnt some very valuable lessons (as have City over the last 2 seasons). For us fans it is like going back to beginning of Liverpool's forays into Europe. Night matches against teams who's names were legendary or of whom we had little or no knowledge. Magic European nights are hear again!!!!
As far as finances are concerned, the largest chunk comes from making the group games anyway so whatever happens, we're up on that aspect of things.
1. As it's a group of death that means the seeds will be worried 2. Third seed = Europa so it's not bad 3. If we get a decent 2nd seed I think we can get 2nd 4. I personally would rather 2nd and a hard cl knockout than Europa next year as I think 4th is a tough goal as well
If we strengthen our defence we should do okay. Like City, foreign teams will fear our attacking ability.
