Truth is they probably would. They wouldn't have the fitness levels to cope. The game is so much faster nowadays. That's why it's silly comparing players from so long ago. It's like the record for the mile has had like 30 seconds smashed off it since then. Roger Bannister wouldn't get today's athletes to break sweat

The game is not just about speed though Shergar, is it?

Best might have been as drunk as a skunk the night before a game but on match day in his pomp he'd run for miles during games beating players and riding tackles for fun, Charlton had great passing ability and a shot like a bullet, but last seasons Utd included players who's only attribute is stamina without as much skill as the players of old who used less stamina but produced better football.

Robson, McGrath, Moran and Whiteside liked a few pints before and after a game but put a shift in and by your logic were better players than the previous generation because fitness levels had improved.

  3. Ever thought that if those players played today they'd also have access to modern day equipment, facilities and sports science meaning their fitness would be much more in liking with modern players?

Humans are humans, most of us have two arms, two legs, a body and head. Its the human mind that's developed over the years and any sportsman from yesteryear would benefit from modern knowledge.

    My thoughts exactly.

Shergar, don't confuse the quality of the players with the quality of the sports science. If Albiston had been born in the 1980s, with the benefit of the modern sport's science, he would have been every bit as good as Evra for us, and then some more. If Evra had been born in the 50s, people probably wouldn't even remember his name.

    Yes, that's right.

Because football was invented by sky sports in 1994.

Reinforcing the defensive line is the primary

Arjen Robben seems to be a primary transfer target for LVG - good idea or bad? Personally, for some reason that I can't fathom, I can't stand him as a person, but think he is a fantastic player - (apart from the diving)

Yeh I'd agree with that. I'm not fussed about his personality, he is absolutely world class and I'm sure I can grow to like him if he tears up the right wing for us <ok>

Probably only get another couple of years out of him though.

Absolutely, at the right price - and with a manager who knows how to get the very best out of him, I think he would be a fantastic signing for us. Every time you watch him play, as soon as he has the ball to feet he carries a tremendous threat and would fit right in with our more dynamic front players.

The other thing is we already know he's proven in the prem, but also how well he will link up with both RVP and Kroos.

In other news, this bloke Tancredi Palmeri (Italian Journo) is doing the rounds saying that he is going to break some big news about United today. Could all be nothing but you never know...

Now that LvG is in charge, is Utd going to be linked with every Dutch footballer on the planet?

According the Evening News Utd have been linked with Netherlands and Feyenoord playmaker Jordy Clasie

Why would Robben diving bother you, Young januzaj Rooney Welbeck ect ect never bothered you. What's one more diver eh.

I think the Fab transfer may be back on with Moyes exit. I reckon he would fancy playing for VG

I smell the fear in you, our players dive and win titles, your best player slips and costs you the title

Problem with Robben is that he never liked the physical attention he got when playing for us. He got singled out a lot after the first season and spent half his time injured or refusing to play through tiny injuries. Given his age, what he'd probably cost in fees and wages I don't think it would be great signing for anyone in the P.L. He's much better suited in Europe.

Lucas Moura for instance may be a better bet. PSG don't play him that much and need to sell to buy due to FFP. He is much younger too.

  18. True. Robben hated being within a foot of anyone, he went sown like a sack of spuds whenever someone entered his radius!
