Southampton appear resigned to losing head coach Mauricio Pochettino to Tottenham after intermediaries started to make discreet checks on possible replacements.

The Argentine is the favourite to become the new boss at White Hart Lane after Tim Sherwood was sacked last week, leaving Daniel Levy looking for his ninth permanent manager in 13 years as Tottenham chairman.
Southampton had been hopeful of keeping Pochettino and have prepared a new deal for the 42-year-old, whose contract expires at the end of next season. But Standard Sport understands Saints have started to make contingency plans, in the event Pochettino decides to leave the south coast for north London.
It is believed Southampton would like to be kept informed of the plans of Oscar Garcia, the Spanish coach who quit Brighton earlier this month after the team were eliminated by Derby in the semi-finals of the Championship play-offs. Garcia has also been the subject of interest from Sunderland and from his home country, where a number of managerial changes are expected in the close season.
It is thought that Dan Petrescu, sacked by Russian club Dynamo Moscow in April, and former Chelsea boss Roberto di Matteo would also be considered by the Southampton board were they to lose Pochettino. Petrescu had a brief spell as a player with Saints in the 2001-02 season and admitted last season that he was desperate to manage in the Premier League.
Di Matteo, 43, has been without a club since he was dismissed by Chelsea in November 2012 — just six months after leading them to victory in the Champions League.

Another story without any substance or further developments. Shock horror, a professional football club have drawn up contingency plans should the manager decide to leave. I would be more worried if we hadnt tbh.

Well I hope those aren't the real contingency plans, because those managers are sub-standard.

So because Petrescu played for us for one year (well over a decade ago), he is currently jobless after parting company with Dynamo Moscow and he is quoted as saying he is desperate to manage in the Premier League it makes him a target now? What source was this lol?

Standard Sport have decent links to West Ham and some other London clubs but absolutely no link to Southampton. My guess would be this story is fed through Spurs sources

I just love some of the names that journalists drag up. We finished 8th, have a promising young squad (even if we lose one or two) and we are being linked with the likes of Malky Mckay and Gus Poyet. I would hope we're far more attractive to better managers then that!

Ranieri wasn't sacked though, despite what the media say. His contract was up at the end of the season, and after discussions, they didn't want to renew it.

Looks a done deal, our fans don't want him. You don't want to lose him. Sadly Poncho wants to go and Levy wants him.

I want Mauricio to stay, but have calmed down...I accept that we are now a more attractive proposition and we will get another decent manager. I've reached acceptance in the grieving process...it will be like a resurrection if MP stays. Hallelujah.

I think Laudrup would be a good fit for your club, he likes to play a passing game and has a good track record in the transfer market. But now that you're progressing as a club you will find that this will happen often and in many ways its a compliment as we have been a feeder club to bigger clubs for years but we keep improving so no reason you can't keep on growing as a club.

If MP really wanted out of SFC, he'd have gone the first day after the season and released a statement telling the fans he had agreed to finish the season.

I wouldn't be surprised if Spurs suddenly announce another manager...happens all the time. They will have a list, but there is no proof they have approached Mauricio. It is even possible that Saints have said no. MP could just sit out his contract and make a decision during the next season and leave on a free. It's not like losing a player on a free...Saints may be happy with that.

Isn't Di Matteo still being paid by Chelsea? He is still listed as in the top 10 earning managers !!! He might not want to take a job if he is still earning that amount.

Until this June, that was apparently why he wasn't interested in jobs at Fulham and Sunderland but soon he will be "free" to look for work!
