Premier League side Newcastle United have set their sights on Cardiff City striker Kenwyne Jones as a possible candidate to replace the departing Shola Ameobi. The news has come in just a matter of days after it was announced that Shola Ameobi would bring his 14 year stay at the club to an end when his contract expires in the summer. It is thought that he will join Steve Bruce’s Hull City. Kenwyne Jones is a possible target for Newcastle United Kenwyne Jones is a possible target for Newcastle United Trinidad & Tobago international Kenwyne Jones is being lined up as his replacement. Jones joined Cardiff in January from Stoke in a deal which saw Peter Odemwingie moving in the opposite direction. The striker has so far made 11 league appearances for the club whilst scoring one goal. It is thought that he will be amongst the fringes at the club with their recent signing of Javi Guerra and expected signing of Lewis Grabban from Bournemouth. If he does decide to join Newcastle, it has been rumoured that it will cost them around £2 million for the striker. The 29-year old would prove to be an experienced member of the squad having spent numerous years in the Premier League with Stoke City. However, it is unlikely that he would feature as a starting squad member too often http://www.not606.com/showthread.php/263129-Please-be-true!!!?p=6516453#post6516453
Even better. To be fair without Shola we would have had a few more defeats against you so he has spared us that embarassment. I don't thinka nyone really sees him as a slayer, but you have to admit it's remarkable that what, 15% of his career goals are against our local rivals? Think he cemented his status when we brought him ona couple of seasons ago and he scared one of the worst bundled finishes ever in the 94th minute to salvage a draw
But that's my point .... why do Newcastle supporters call him the Mackem Slayer when he obviously isn't? Scoring in the derbies makes it looks like he doesn't try hard enough in other games.
I genuinely think it's mostly tongue in cheek as he truly is a shocking player. He has very limited ability and the idea that anyone would be afraid of him is laughable. Back in 2001 I went to watch him play for England U21's in Leicester (as I went to uni in Leicester at that time) and he did a class cruyff turn by the corner flag to lay it on a plate for Jay Boothroyd and I recall thinking "wowzer that lad plays for us!!". Can't really recall him ever doing anything as classy for Newcastle. If we keep him it merely highlights our lack of ambition.
As said above, I genuinely think it's tongue in cheek. He's so shockingly bad that anything of note he does becomes hilarious.
Not a joke, more a tongue in cheek amusement Partly at Sunderland's expense that someone so **** has scored so many goals against you Has any other player scored more against you?
I reckon Geoff Hurst did in one match I was at a wedding reception, in Consett, that was 50/50 you and us ........ ffs
Didn't you know records only count since the inception of the premier league? Geoff Hurst is irrelevant I believe that was a double hat-trick, and how many times have you heard commentators say that "no one has ever scored a premier league hat trick"?? Discounting any top flight achievements pre 1992.
Interesting, where'd you meet him? Always seemed like a canny bloke when I've heard him on the telly like.
In the same way "Shola the mackem slayer" is tongue in cheek, is your sig the same? Brilliant achievement by Sunderland this year but greatest escape in prem history? Firstly that's an oxymoron, as "the prem" is not history, secondly the likes of Fulham and WBA have pulled off far more unlikely feats.
What made it so special was beating title contenders Chelsea who'd not lost at home to any team under Mourhino. Throw in almost beating the title winners, again on their own ground, and the special nature builds. Add the fact that we went behind in both games and it really is something. You can throw in that it was all done as the rock bottom club who'd managed just 1 point in almost a third of the season. Sunderland had been rock bottom for almost the entire season and then went on to win at Old Trafford just for fun despite the 'Giggs factor'. But what makes it such a great escape is that the same team had crumbled like a paper stepladder at Spurs when everyone said, "That's it, they're down." I bet you did
I did actually. But in the middle of all that, losing to teams like Swansea, West Ham and Norwich cancelled out your impressive victories. I wouldn't say that you got more points from the last 8 games than you should have, you just got them in the wrong matches. Your first half of the season fixture list was insanely difficult so realistically your position was a false one.
Just as well, otherwise you might have counted Alex Tait, a little ginger haired centre forward who hammered 5 or six past us when you scored twelve goals over two Christmas games. But keep that to yourself.
You've got it back to front, it wasn't in the middle ... ... the good results were after those games, apart from Swansea which was irrelevant as we were already safe. You're also ignoring the Cardiff & West Brom victories and the fact that we won 4 on the trot to move from rock bottom to 14th. It may have also slipped your mind that, before Man City, we'd lost 5 games in a row so turning that round looked impossible. When we lost to Everton we were 7 points from safety with only 6 games to play. As 2 of those games were away to title contenders it makes Sid's signature correct, it was the greatest escape ever.
With 2 games in hand. Like I said, false position. You weren't quite as bad as the table made you look
You're getting yersel a bit mixed up though and changing the goalposts. What you said was, "the likes of Fulham and WBA have pulled off far more unlikely feats." With 6 games to go West Brom were only in the bottom 3 on goal difference. With 6 games to go Sunderland were rock bottom, 4 points of 2nd bottom and SEVEN off safety. Nowt to do with games in hand. West Brom only won 1 of their final 6 games. Sunderland won 4 of their last 5 games. All West Brom had to do was beat Portsmouth who were already safe but nowt special. How does that make West Brom's feat far more unlikely?
