Ayoze Perez signing is imminent apparently:

Spanish striker to join Newcastle after rejecting Porto

Newcastle United are on the verge of completing their first signing of the summer.

CD Tenerife striker Ayoze Perez has reportedly turned down the chance to sign for FC Porto, and has chosen Newcastle United.

Portuguese journalist Goncalo Lopes tweeted last night that the Spanish striker had turned down the Portuguese giants, and is rumoured to be close to signing a contract with the Magpies.

Last night, Twitter was awash with rumours that Perez was actually in Tyneside yesterday for a medical, and the move will be officially confirmed by the club later today.

The youngster has scored 16 goals in Spain’s Segunda B for Chicharreros last season. The release fee is reported to be around €2million.

Perez came through the Tenerife B side in the 2012-13 season – when he scored five goals in 18 games for the club.

He made his debut for the first team in a defeat against AD Alcorcon. The 20-year-old followed that up with his first goal for the club against Real Madrid Castillo.

I would hope Alan Pardew doesn't destroy the potential he has because this player can be one of the best in the world. All though he could end up loaned to St Mirren because he can't defend.

Xisco? Hopefully not. We actually scout players these days rather than sign people as a result of Dennis Wise being impressed with a youtube montage.

According to this he sounds very promising:

He sounds like he'd make a good backup for the senior strikers which we will hopefully sign. One thing does confuse me though - why would any promising young player join NUFC? We're the club where hot prospects stagnate, where youth is never given a chance and where hope comes to die.

Money?? If i was neutral I'd look @ the players Porto have brought through compared to us, mix in a bit of champions league football and it seems a no brainer, unless the kids a huge Shearer fan

We're also the club where decent players can put themselves in he shop window and be sold on to really good clubs, where they can then warm the bench

Are you insinuating that we may buy low and sell high? How very dare you.

Frankly, at the moment it's probably our biggest selling point to prospective signings:

"I know we're a bag of ****e but we're only interested in a quick profit and we're in the Prem, so if you do well you can be sure we'll flog you as soon as possible to someone good, like we did with Ba and Cabaye."

Good marketing plug, honest and inspirational. All they've got to do is give it 3 or 4 months at Newcastle and they could be off to a big club, like Southampton, Stoke or Palace.

Should we have a single thread for transfers? Colback's rumoured to be on the way, I've no idea if he's any good. I imagine he's slightly worse than Shelvey. Also rumours abound that we've been knocked back on Cabella, cos we've offered 8m euros. Nicollin wants 13m (allegedly). Personally not sure how we, having taken and ruined MYM, are going to appeal to the lad.

What else does Pardew do except destroy everything he comes in contact with?

Regardless of whether he's one for the future or ready now, it's just nice to be making a permanent signing (more and more journalists are reporting that a deal is close). Any player that gets 16 goals at just 20 years of ages must have some promise and for 2m it's almost a no lose situation. If he comes good we have got ourselves a bargain, if he doesn't we'll probably be able to flog him back to Spain for half the price.

Granted it was in the second tier of spanish football, but imagine a 20 years old English lad getting 20 goals in the Championship, you'd be quoted 8m-10m which is just ridiculous. Connor Wickham cost 8m and he'd done nothing for 3 years up until a month ago.

It's a positive bit of news for a change, and should be treated as positive rather than the usual "he's young, Pardew will ruin him" etc. Over the past 6 - 8 years we've not got a good record at bringing through young players but aside from Southampton annd possibly Everton neither does anyone else in the Premier League. You could add Liverpool to that list for this season, but before this season they've produced nothing either.

Nobody knows how young players will turn out, that young Chelsea lad Josh Mceachran was meant to replace Lampard, not going to happen. Sinama Pongolle and Le Tellac were meant to be the next big thing for Liverpool a good few years back and they weren't. You then have Arsenal with Senderos, Denilson etc. Man City have produced Michah Richards & Joe Hart and nothing else.

Loads of teams fail in this area, we can't have a go at the club for trying to put this right.

You gotta love the slaughtering the NCJ Media group is taking over their lazy reporting of this story. Whilst there may well be some truth (the 2m fee is about our stamp), all this "he is the highest scorer in quarter of a century at Tenerife" is getting shredded by normal fans. Although I don't agree with banning them and making enemies, The Journal, Chronicle and their reporting teams are beyond shoddy as far as accuracy and journalism in general goes.

Sadly the club is being dragged down to their level under Ashley's stewardship.

My only cynicism towards the deal for a young 'un is that I feel the design is to bring him in with a view to selling him for top dollar. I know that it's almost inevitable now in this footballing world, and we should treat it with optimism in that to be sold for big bucks he'd have done a good job for the club, but it doesn't detract from the fact my first reaction is a cynical one. That in itself is a bit sad.

Don't know anything about him otherwise. What I don't want to see is an influx of "potential" strikers who could hamper the development of Armstrong. I don't mind us bringing in someone truly class but if we end up bulking out with cheap options it's unlikely to really fix the problem. We've had enough issues with having little more than turgid nobodies in reserve.

    Maybe someone can help me.

Who are all these players that we have sold at massive profits since we were promoted?
Other than Cabaye and Carroll, I'm at a loss as who they are or perhaps these other players don't actually exist.

No problem with either of the above going at those prices for me, the issue is that they weren't replaced at the time of the sale.

Ba? Sorry but no, his contract terms allowed him to walk out.

Who else, as I haven't any idea who they are and I'd like to join in the myth that is perpetuated that we constantly sell our best players.

    Help please....

Ba counts. We got him for free and built a £7m profit into his contract.

I agree it is a bit of a myth as other than the two exmaples given it simply doesn't happen.

However, once interest is firmed up in any of our "big hitters" (if we have any left) Pardew regularly releases sound bites confirming we're "vulnerable" and "not in a position to turn down a huge offer" so I think our strategy is known to all. Our strategy is very similar to Spurs, they're just a good 4 or 5 years further down the line than us and also got lucky with Bale. Spurs only spend what they bring in, as do we. Berbatov, Bale, Modric etc have all gone because of big offers, they then used the funds to strengthen two or three positions.

We're trying to follow this strategy, just on a smaller scale at present. I do think by the end of this window some of the heat will be off Ashley as I think we'll spend 30-40 million and strengthen the squad in the necessary areas. It's a strategy that can prove successful but it does take time.

If we sign Perez for 2m and sell him for 15m in three or four years then that strategy is working. It really is a make or break summer to see if we harbour any sort of ambition to progress the club and this summer we have to be patient, more patient than previous windows IMO.

I of course understand people that are reluctant to be patient as not buying a player for 18 months is frustrating, but if we buy 6 in this window we'll have signed 12 players in two years and suddenly the numbers don't start to look too bad. Get 5 or 6 in this window and then we should be in a position where only 1-3 players are needed every 12 months.
