What I want to see at the World Cup is a shot of Rickie about to take a penalty, then cut away to his parents in the stands, with his mum too nervous to watch. Like CHris Hoy's mum at the Olympics.

    I think it's correct, though.

Wait till the World Cup goes to Russia and Qatar: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-27423404

I know the media always like to question the suitability and the preparedness before a tournament of this stature but it is questionable how this tournament cost is expected to be over $13 bn which is almost 5 times that of Germany and South Africa. It is obviously a World Cup and should be held globally but socio-economically you can understand why there are critics.

The total prize money on offer for the tournament was confirmed by FIFA as US$576 million (including payments of US$70 million to domestic clubs), a 37 percent increase from the amount allocated in the 2010 tournament. Before the tournament, each of the 32 entrants will receive US$1.5 million for preparation costs. Once at the tournament, the prize money will be distributed as follows:

US$8 million – To each team eliminated at the group stage (16 teams)
US$9 million – To each team eliminated in the round of 16 (8 teams)
US$14 million – To each team eliminated in the quarter-finals (4 teams)
US$20 million – Fourth placed team
US$22 million – Third placed team
    US$25 million – Runner up
    US$35 million – Winner
As with the previous World Cup, FIFA will make payments to the domestic clubs of the players representing their national teams at the tournament. This will see a total of US$70 million paid to domestic clubs.

Does this mean Saints will get some dosh, and finally do you think there should be such levels of prize money for the tournament?

I suppose it does mean we'll get something, though I doubt it will be much.

As for the prize money, it does seem rather a lot and that money could probably be better spent on the grass roots (I suppose some of it will be by the associations that are awarded it, but still).

Always show your workings! - Where is the missing US$100 million?

    Saints Share?

    $70m/32 = $2,187,500 a nation
    $2,187,500/23 = $95,108.70c a player

    $95,108.70c x 6 = $570,652.17c

    US$1.68 to £1.00 - Exchange Rate

    $570,652.17/1.68 = £339,673.91 or 20 days of Pochettino's new contract

Be nice if Saints get some money....we deserve it. As for the money for the teams...makes sense. Think how much it must cost to pay all the costs of the qualifying rounds over two years, never mind (in our case) taking the team (players and background staff) to Portugal. Miami and Brazil. That must run into millions. Smaller countries may do it cheaper, but they probably need the money more. If the various federations didn't make money, some countries would struggle to go there.

Our midfield looks a bit more of a gamble seen as Wilshere only played 15 mins (albeit he looked ok) and Oxlade-Chamberlain didn't even make the bench. All we need in the heat of Brazil is to be down to seven midfielders two of which are Gerrard and Lampard.

I'm taking your point and going off at a bit of a tangent here, but it's relevant as we'll be hearing a lot more about this issue over the next couple of months; or we should be. A tournament like the World Cup should involve a significant economic boost to the wider economy of the host country. That imo should be just as important as stuffing the coffers of the respective FAs, many of which are notoriously corrupt.

Fifa does everything it can to ensure little or no tax is paid by itself to the host government, and heavy handed policing of sponsor's privileges makes it very hard for local businesses or individuals to take advantage. Expect CocaCola, Adidas, Budweiser, Sony etc to pump millions in in tax-exempt sponsorship deals. Meanwhile massive restraint of trade will be imposed on any of these firms competitors, especially small local ones.

At the end of the tournament the Fifa circus will roll out of town with truckloads of cash, Brazil will remain one of the most unequal societies on earth, new favelas (slums) will spring up to accommodate those people who were driven out of the old ones by armed police, leaving them in even worse conditions than they endured before.

Still, with any luck Brazil will meet England in the Final, the slums of Rio will party like it's the end of time, and Rickie Lambert will become a household name around the world. So it's not all bad.

Good, post, but this bit above got me thinking about something else.

All this press coverage about Adam and Luke, but no real mentions of SRL. How ironic if he was the man that shone this WC!

His age is against SRL...but goal scorers are always the ones remembered. Barring injuries, I presume he will be the one coming on later in the game.

Rickie's global fame will do wonders for our beetroot exports, so, as Archers says, it's not all bad.

.....to score the winner and be loved by the whole country!

Actually, a bit of me wouldn't like that. He's our Rickie, not the whole country's

Judging by the fact he's never taken one for us (I think?), probably not too hot.

Well he would have to be sensational at penalties to displace Rickie as our penalty taker.
