It's not the penalties themselves that are important in this round. What UEFA have done is to clearly announce that FFP is here and that they have the will to impose penalties.

In this round UEFA had already forgone the maximum penalty but they have now imposed 'significant' penalties without having to defend themselves at CAS. It will be interesting to see what might happen if any of the clubs penalised in this round fail the next round of investigations.

  2. Last year, a lot of clubs were warned. This year it's gone further. I reckon the punishment should be:

First offence: large fine and squad reduction (21 players)

Second offence: large fine, further squad reduction (18 players) and CL points deduction

    Third offence: Expelled

The title should be rescinded. As if we needed more proof that all they've done is bought it by inflating the market and needlessly buying talent to disappear on the bench or in the reserves. It's highly improper and damaging to the competitiveness of the league.

Still think its pointless. I doubt that squad cap will make any difference at all to them.
As for the fine, they and PSG can pay off the fine straight away if they wanted to. Financially punishing clubs who have no financial issues to ever worry about is pointless.

So essencially they will have to sell to buy, didn`t you all feel sorry for Rafa when he had to do this and say it held him back?

They can pay off the fine with no problem, however the way i understand it that money will be taken off the amount they are able to spend.

No they can spent 49 fn million you turd burgler!

Benetiz could spend say 20 max and he blew it on Keane and aquilani this brought in kyrgiakos and the like

City will buy the Porto pair, they'll strengthen and frankly there plenty of surplus to bring another 40-50 mil in handy

Hardly. They can still spend £49m without selling, they just need to be careful of the wage budget. £49m summer transfer kitty is more than probably everyone apart from Chelsea & United will get this year.

Will be intereting if the £17m fine this year goes towards losses in their finances for next year's FFP though as you'd think that may also then have an impact. Don't get why £32m is suspended... what for? Next year? Next time they fail?

  9. Rafa didn't have a £500m squad to use

What they paid for players is irrelevant, it is the amount they will be able to sell them for that counts, this will not be helped by the wages they will expect either (see how much trouble they had getting rid of Bridge).

  11. Obviously, and they have two teams worth of players they can sell that are worth something. Rafa at Liverpool didn't bar a few key players. Plus there's the small matter of £49m they can still spend too.

I have said this many times on here (and now Brendan has backed me up ), Rafa wasted so much money every season by buying 5/6 poor to average players instead of getting 1/2 class players to improve the team and therefore squad.

Minus the 17 mil fine, if they buy two top players and pay them 100k/week each that takes another 10.4 mil out of they will only have 21.6 mil to actually buy the players with (without sales) so they will not be aiming for top quality unless they only go for one player.

You lot are the inventors of the term "net spend" to defend Rafa, so what was it, did he sell players to buy better or did he sell they few key players to buy worse?

No as I understand it the £17mil is separate from transfer kitty. They will have to pay that straight to UEFA.

The are then only allowed to spend £49mil in the two transfer windows of next season (summer & winter). However any transfer money received can also be put towards player acquisitions. I would assume this would also cover wages, both new and ended contracts.

So they still have £49+ million to spend, which given their current squad would be more than enough. (not to mention all the hangers-on they could off load for reasonable fee and wage reduction, ie Scott Sinclar etc)

This is the major problem for them (as in the Bridge case), they can sell players at a loss with little impact for themselves but if the player has time left on his contract he does not have to leave to a club who pay lower wages, so they could be stuck with most untill their contracts expire which means they will get nothing for them.

You are right in a way, it is not linked directly to the transfer kitty but still goes into the proffit and loss equasion. 49 mil is the most they can spend on transfers but if they lose too much over the year then the spend will be reduced by the equivalent amount.

  19. Assuming the fine comes out the FFP calculation. How many clubs can go for more than one top player regardless of how many they sell? Pus, you're also assuming Man City give a ****.

    #139
  20. Both! First half of his reign he was given money to spend and he spent it very well. Second half he was told he had to sell to buy, he sold top players and failed to replace them. Is it really that hard to understand?
