A travel thread seems like a good idea, so next year, when you decide to go to Ulaanbaatar you will know that somewhere on here you will find something to help guide you.

I can't kick off with anything as I'm not going anywhere but I did go on a cruise once, from Auckland to Brisbane. It was a good form of transport but I wouldn't want to be on a regular cruise ship for more than 4 nights.

I have never been on a cruise, but Mrs W_Y keeps rattling on about going on one...so no doubt I will be nagged into it eventually. I have been on the overnight ferry between Stockholm and Helsinki many times, really good in deep winter when there is lots of ice about!
Still deciding where to go this summer - as soon as Mrs W_Y completes her dissertation at the end of the month, we will start to look around. I quite fancy Mauritius, but it's a long flight!

Santorini beckons for me next month as pleasure. Hoping for lots of sun and just a good relax by the pool. Decided against long haul as I'm fed up of flying though long haul seems to be where the value is this year.

Too true Aberdeen. Can get 2 weeks all inclusive in Sri Lanka, Mauritius or Mexico slightly cheaper than 2 weels all inclusive in Italy or Tenerife! Sr Lanka is a bit too far and it will be monsoon at the end of July, so that's out

Maybe Mex is heading for the Arndale centre<laugh>.

I'm off to Italy at the end of August, mainly so that Mini Bloother can visit the Ferrari museum. If the fixtures are kind I'll miss one Saturday fixture, hopefully one that I probably wouldn't have gone to anyway. Going later than usual also means I can get to all the pre-season games and go to the openday this year for the first time in years (assuming they have one this year).

You might be able to take in a Milan game Bloother as compensation.

Not where I go it isn't Mex. There is usually a gun battle going on between the Federales and The Zetas.

Mind you - if you can duck and dive between the cartel related shenanigans it's good for cheap booze and even cheaper dental work.

My dad and I are going to Italy to see the Golden boys in pre-season training. Im just trying to finalise the location, but its the Udine region and there are plenty of rumours of a friendly with Udinese and maybe Granada. I shall take photos and share them when I can.

It#s amazing Mex but I imagine the same's true where you are. When i went to Tuscanny a few years back there was some muppet in the hotel moaning that you couldn't get a Chinese. "Brits" abroad eh?* <doh>

*I very much doubt any of you lot fall into the category I'm talking about but i suspect you knew that anyway!

Tomorrow I am heading south west to Biarritz. Never been there, so no idea if I will like it or not. Looks as if it will be warm and sunny to start with, then some showers, then back to the good days again. Usually like the Med. from the eastern extreme where a day in Italy is fine, or the western end where a day in Spain is equally enjoyable. My first experience of France was Provence, and I would go there every year if I didn't have someone who wants to see somewhere different.

I had three weeks booked in Italy a few years ago, and really didn't like it. There were some highlights, but it didn't work out and we moved back to the Med. It was pre-Euro days and when you bought something you would receive your change plus a few sweets as the lire was worth next to nothing.

Regarding Brits abroad I have seen some funny antics when someone has decided that shouting in English will make himself understood. To watch the switch off from a native who doesn't like being spoken to in that way is quite revealing. We choose hotels that do not have English speakers very often, and you get a good reaction to speaking their language with a heavy English accent. They appreciate the fact that you are trying. Ordering a meal is simple enough, but a conversation that you are not expecting can throw the language skills into the tumble dryer and goodness knows what comes out sometimes.
