Is it true that the money saved from axing 606 has gone towards some of the BBC's army attending Glastonbury this year?

In 2009 it was 407, in 2010 274 and the BBC claim this year will be fewer. The Daily Mail say otherwise (around 400), but whichever is correct it is an awful lot for a music festival in a field. I suppose the great and good need to know how their little darlings are getting on while they are at Wimbledon, and how many BBC staff are their. 606 could have lived for year s with this amount of money.

I more or less agree Zen.

This won't be a universal view, but the BBC should be covering Glastonbury in my opinion.

Even so, to cover Glastonbury to the BBC's standards, by my reckoning you need eight to ten technical staff/cameramen to cover four or five stages, staff for three or four radio stations (eight to ten people per station should be more than enough, and they should be expected to double up as roaming camera teams around the festival for part of the 21 hours a day that they're not broadcasting), a news team to cover the news channel and Five Live (six to eight people), a small shared production team for the music (two people per stage plus two supervisory producers should do it), two or three dedicated BBC online staff, plus a small logistics and management team overseeing the entire operation (generous estimate at twenty five), and an extra three or four content-focussed people (a mix of junior presenters and journalists) just to be on the safe side.

Even taking the higher numbers throughout, which I consider to be on the comfortable side, that's a total of around 140 people.

Controversially defending the BBC for a moment, the video features Helen Skelton has been doing for Five Live this week are a fair example of what can be done cost-effectively. Light-hearted content, which makes use of a presenter, cameraman and technical staff who would otherwise be at Wimbledon but standing idle, with the only true cost being a little bit of production time. For that, you have content that can be adapted for TV, radio and online, and which while magazine-ish, isn't really being done anywhere else.

Evening all - been playing with my new toy. Those Apple chaps make some lovely products.....and before this creates the usual iPhone vs SmartPhone and OSx vs Android girly debate...don't bother, I'm talking about real mens toys!

Britain's favourite tennis player currently a break up in the final set.

Scotland's favourite tennis player has also had a good day.

Can anyone explain what I am missing by not having one of these dubiously named communication devices?

I have a couple of mobile phones that keep me in touch. I send and receive texts and even make a call from time to time. The last time I used one to find out the Watford score it cost me over £5. OK I was in Corsica and had a brief look at the beeb website. Having now conquered WiFi that costs me next to nothing in France, but rather more in the UK, why do I need to peer into a small screen that I can't see unless I find my glasses. ;)

Maybe an Ipad or Galaxy tab or a small business style lap top would suit you better Frenchie!

I have two laptops that serve me very well. I thought last week that one of them was in terminal decline, but a bit of clever reconfiguration sorted that out for a bit longer.

Well I thought it was clever. <laugh>

Norway - My only concern with Android is:- 1. Owned by Google and they capture a lot of info about you through it 2. Huge risk of viruses and compatibility issues - you have a similar risk with 1 on Apple but zero risk on 2...This whole OSx vs Android is a load of bollox - just like The Beatles vs The Stones or Oasis vs Blur
But I am talking computers not phones....
