We could sack one in January as well Donna. In fact we could probably get rid of one in November, one in January and one mid March. Do you ever get the feeling Levy's Mrs has told him he is no good in the sack and based on him misunderstanding the comment he is trying to prove her wrong?

I have a lot of trouble judging Sherwood because I'm not sure how crucial it was that he consistently said the wrong thing to the media. While I hear he lost the dressing room, I'd like to know exactly who he lost (other than Sandro, who seems obvious.) I'll grant you that if he lost enough players (read Eiriksen, though I don't know why he would have wanted to go) then he did have to go. My first concern is whether Ade will end up going because Sherwood left (not that we're likely to ever know if that's true.)

On balance, I would have given Sherwood another year. May as well be consistent. I was against sacking Harry and AVB as well. Spurs improved while he was here. 4-1-1 in his last six games, including possibly our two best games of the season. He got very little credit for getting the team moving in the right direction, scoring goals, picking up points at a good clip and getting the best, or very nearly, out of our two most dangerous players. The highest win percentage stat may hide notably poor cup performances, but it should be noted that he wasn't just the most successful coach in our history, he was the most successful by a fair margin. Whether you agree with me about whether Sherwood should have gone depends not only on what you think about Sherwood, but how optimistic you are that the next change will be a change for the better. I'm a glass half full about the present, glass half empty about the future kind of guy. The grass usually isn't greener, IMO.

What we, the fans, want, is a good question. We hated AVB because he was dull. I'm tempted to say we hated Sherwood because he was exciting.

    Of the candidates:

I actually like both Pochettino and de Boer, and would take them in that order. Pochettino has got a proven record of reasonable success in the PL, and that's a big factor to me. Winning a small league with the best club is a very different problem than trying to take the sixth biggest club in the richest league to fourth. I wouldn't particularly want Benitez, but I wouldn't be leading protests against him either. Anyone Chelsea fans hate can't be all bad. I draw the line at Moyes, though, who I think has proven beyond the shadow of a doubt he's exactly the wrong kind of manager for our club. Everything about him says overcautious and underambitious.

<laugh> quite possible......probably takes all his home issues out on the mighty Spurs. Apparently there was some other bloke sat in the manager's seat on Sunday too..he hasn't been seen since either.

Remember, we've got to work Ted "I'm walkin' home with all the stuff you let me wear" Lasso in there again.

Yeah, those of us who liked all three managers form a pretty small club.

There might be another one of us out there somewhere. :emoticon-0138-think

ill be honest.....AVB would have got us to the promised land.....patience is a virtue Levy doesn't possess....so we could get Winston Churchill in.....he would be doomed also.

I'm just wondering who of all possible candidates would play a 4-4-2 for the most part. Benitez, maybe? Didn't he play 4-4-2 with Liverpool? Not Pochettino or de Boer...

Going from basically 4-2-3-1 to basically 4-4-2 to 4-3-3 (or even back to 4-2-3-1) in a year may not be the ideal recipe for success.

Pochettino to be appointed within 48 hours or so, apparently, according to the "itk's".

I'm really not sure about this appointment. I just have this feeling that for all the praise he's had, we could easily see what happened to Laurdup, happen again.

Obviously I'll get behind him, but I don't think it's the right appointment. Levy trying to pull off a masterstroke (which rarely happens) and I don't think poch's name is big enough. I can't see the unhappy players thinking "ohh spot on, Mauricio Pochettino is taking over."

We need a big name this time. I just don't think he's it.

Agreed. We need an experienced manager, if LVG was Levy's number 1 target the why doesn't Levy stick with that sort of type of elder manager whos been there and done it all before and go for Benitez.

Taking such a big risk on the important man at a football club is typical Spurs, if it doesn't work this time then I expect the Levy out protests to really grow and this time it might actually work.

Because experience is NOT on Levy's agenda guys! It's all about one thing... cost. LVG was out of contract after the World Cup = cheap! Buying out Benitez's or De Boer's contract will be costly. Poch's contract at Southampton has one year left and will be peanuts. Face it people, our Chairman is a miser and always goes for the cheapest option every time. He's not a gambler when it comes to money. He wants the best option at rock bottom rates. Been that way for over 10 years so why would it change now?

I'd love to know what goes through Levy's head when making these appointments. (presuming Poch is taking over, that is). Does he weigh anything up in his head based on the past? or, does he literally look for the cheapest person who could possibly do the job? - the latter is a big risk, which we've already seen not work for us.

Bringing in a foreign manager with little to no experience in the PL didn't work... take Ramos and AVB. Poch could be exactly the same, which is a risk we cannot afford to take right now. One could even argue that his tenure with Southampton hasn't actually been particularly difficult. Southampton have arguably one of the best youth systems in England, and he took over from Adkins who hardly did a bad job! Everything was set up for Poch. I'm not saying he's not a good manager, I'm just saying we don't know enough about him yet, which is why a "Laudrup" scenario springs to mind.

If we're going to go for a foreign manager, that's fine. But it has to be someone with experience. Or it needs to be someone who was highly respected during their playing career and has already gone on to impress during their managerial career. However, the latter is too big a risk for spurs at the moment, due to the position we find ourselves in.

For me, the sensible choice is Benitez, if he's available/interested as the media suggest. But in true spurs style, Levy will go for the cheap option, rather than bringing us in a proven winner. - and we'll probably be seeing groundhog day, again.
De Boer is someone I'd love to see at the lane, but now is just bad timing. Yes he's a winner, and someone who I think the players would respect, but he's not got the PL experience and that is a major worry. Levy wouldn't give him time to implement his ideas.

Poch has done remarkably well with Soton but I'm just a little worried we're moving for him too soon. He's not a household name, so my worry would be is his "reputation" big enough to keep our big stars? Bringing in players shouldn't be too much of a problem but retaining our current ones is more of a priority for me and I'm just worried that Poch may not be a guy who players would be desperate to work under. When you look at the names we've been linked with:

de Boer - 4 league titles, knows Eriksen & Vertonghen well (though still young himself and isn't in a major league)
van Gaal - world class manager with titles in different countries.
Benitez - won many trophies with different clubs.
Ancelotti (though highly unlikely) - same as Benitez.
Pochettino - plays very good football.

I'm not having a dig at the guy as I think he's a fantastic young manager, but I just think we're moving for him too early. No disrespect to Espanyol or Soton but the pressure and targets of working for us are much greater.

Agree to a certain extent, but then part of me thinks we may be better off building an actual team rather than 10 dysfunctional players and Bale or 11 dysfunctional players like this year.
What we NEED is a manager to come in and play nice football, that will at least keep the fans on board. Then we need to back him financially if we can afford and and first and foremost with time.
If the football under AVB had been better i think he'd still be here.

I would rather the players chose to stay for the club/fans/teammates/training facilities rather than because the manager is a "big name"

Spurs are in quite a unique situation which is why it is so hard for the board to get it right.
Demands of the modern game means you have to achieve your targets. Tottenham's target is top four and there are six teams fighting for that position. The two that didn't get it, got rid of their manager.
The other premier league teams also have a target of either mid table or survival. All those teams who struggled with survival fired their manager. The ones who have it easy are those clubs who succeed mid table.
You can be sure it will happen again next season.
It is a similar situation with regards to playing young players who have come through the ranks at your club. For the top six it is a big risk if they don't succeed so they might try one here and there especially in the domestic cups. For a team like Southampton it was easy as they had no pressure.
