We'll earn about 80 milion from tv rights this season. It's enough to cover our wage bill and transfer debts.

And he was a better and more ambitious player than Lallana is now. The point is, he loves Liverpool, just as Lallana loves Southampton, and he stayed and got on with it, just as Lallana will surely do if/when he doesn't get his move (which as Dan says, he is not pushing for anywhere near as hard as Gerrard did).

We're not daft, we all know Liverpool are a bigger club and can offer champions league and so on that we probably won't be able to, but you don't have to look far from home to see that that's not always the be all and end all.

I genuinely don't think the two situations are that comparable.

If we had not won the Champs League then I think he would have gone. Especially the way the final went. There was hope that we would improve and mount a Premiership challenge which we did.

Lets not forget the pinnacle is the Champions League and we were back there in the final again in 2007.

Gerrard had a stage to show off and I think Lallana wants exactly that.

Of course you don't, it shatters your cosy illusion that your talisman would never have left. He was pretty bloody close let me tell you. Much closer than Lallana is now.

He said he wanted to go after you won the champions league: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/l/liverpool/4653041.stm

If Lallana wants a stage to show off he has it - the world cup, and the premier league, both of which get enormous audiences.

On top of that, he's playing week-in-week-out, in a team that is built around him. If he goes to Liverpool he'll be in and out of that side and will find it much harder to impress.

He's got a pretty good thing going, considering he was playing in league one three years ago, and I don't think he's going to throw it away to sit on the bench against Olympiakos for one season.

I don't think Bow4Fowler's point/post is in the slightest unreasonable, and you can see PTF's point too. Fact of the matter is, we have no idea what's really in Adam's heart and head right now. We have no idea if Liverpool have made a bid. We have no idea of the WC will sate his need for recognition, or encourage it further. We will just have to wait and see. Anything else is just idle speculation/attempts at wish-fulfilment.

    Oh you're so exacting! <laugh>

I don't know exactly how close he is to leaving, but there is nothing (other than paper talk, which doesn't even include a price) to suggest we have even received an offer for him. He has repeatedly stated he's happy here, loves the club, and would "one day" like to be playing at a higher level.

Gerrard, on the other hand, came out and openly stated he wanted to go.

    QED.

That Liverpool fan has made a perfectly reasonable suggestion that you just dismiss out of hand. He doesn't say it is fact, just a reasonable suggestion.

Good luck with dealing with it IF it happens .

I think they both have a point FLT in fairness, they're just disagreeing as to which is the bottom and which is the mouth. Fact is, none of us know till we smell it up close.

Of course I'm dismissing it, what do you want me to say? "Yes you're right, it's only natural that all our players would want to join Liverpool and sit on the bench so much that despite the fact they love it here they'd be willing to burn bridges and agitate for a transfer, after all they are a great and glorious club and they're definitely going to be title contenders even though they ballsed up the best chance they'll ever have in spectacular fashion, but you know, they'll be in the champions league where they will probably struggle to get out of the group, but the league cup is always up for grabs I suppose"

Sorry but I just don't think he'll go. Genuinely.

I'm well aware of the Gerrard situation but I reiterate my point that we were already in the champs league and improving in the league which I honestly think contributed to him staying as well as the fact he knew he would be turning his back on his boyhood club and, lets face it, knew he would not be a popular face in the city ever again.

Yes the World Cup is a huge stage but that comes round every 4 years!!

I actually think what we're discussing here both has merits, but Lallana has actually stated he would like Champions League football - but interestingly said that doesn't mean leaving Southampton.

Which brings backs to my original point about your owners and whether they are still taking you forward and are actually increasing the anxiety around the club by saying nothing which is forcing players like Lallana to think about whats best for them.

    He might stay, who knows.

Set out the plan and everything else will fall into place. Don't and we'll be left clinging on to what we can for years to come, just like the good old days!

You're right, and it's refreshing to have a Liverpool fan come over here who seems to have half a clue as to what's going on, so you're to be commended for that, but Lallana saying he would like to play in the champions league "one day" (and you correctly note that he said he doesn't necessarily plan to leave at the moment to get it) is not the same as Gerrard saying "I'm off, right now", which is what he did (and he still stayed!)

The board are not "saying nothing", not at all. They have made several statements saying that we don't need or want to sell our best players. They haven't said anything publicly since Sunday, and for some reason people get the impression that they are being suspiciously quiet. Why do people expect them to give us up-to-the-minute updates on all transfer dealings? No club in the world does that.

It's correct that we haven't seen, practically, how ambitious they are, but they have said things will continue as before, so really, until we see otherwise, we have to take them at their word.
